TULIP – The Way to Internships

Educational institutes are producing lakhs of graduates every year. But there are no employment opportunities to all of them. Lack of necessary skills is making them unemployed.
Under these circumstances, the central government has introduced a new internship scheme- Tulip (The Urban Learning Internship Program). Tulip offers students internships in the fields of engineering, science, commerce, law, architecture and the arts. Let us know the details...

TULIP(The Urban Learning Internship Program (TULIP)) envisions to create synergies between advancing functional skills in students and harnessing their energy and ideas to co-create solutions for the future of our cities.

TULIP has been envisioned to deliver the required skills and talent by equipping the youth with problem-solving and critical thinking skills through hands-on, experiential learning in India’s fast-growing urban ecosystem. Experiential learning opportunities in the urban sector will help transform them into future leaders. The flexible nature of the program provides for inclusivity and access, is ecosystem driven and built on the principles of federated architecture and transparency.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has introduced a special scheme ... 'The Urban Learning Internship Program' to provide graduates with practical training. This is called TULIP. A separate portal was also created for this purpose. Applicants will get an internship in projects under the Urban and Smart Cities Scheme of the Government of India. This includes the central government as well as the state governments and the Union Territory Governments. The Urban Learning Internship Program is supported by the Urban Development Departments, Urban Local Bodies (ULB) or Smart Cities. In addition to engineering, science, commerce, arts courses, law students can get internship opportunities through Tulip.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE
The TULIP program is being implemented through a partnership between MoHUA and AICTE. At the State level, TULIP will be supported by the Urban Development departments in providing a clear roadmap for the ULBs/smart cities to adopt TULIP in their respective organisations.

At the ULB/smart city level they have been provided flexibility in defining the roles, numbers and other parameters of how TULIP can best serve their contextual needs.

OUTCOMES
TULIP has been designed keeping in mind the individual needs of the participants. The program intends to deliver for:
MoHUA- (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs): Strengthen institutional capacity of urban ecosystem and youth engagement towards urban initiatives, creating an ecosystem wherein youth can contribute towards building a liveable city.
ULBs & smart cities: Skilled, high-quality workforce and innovative citizen-centric solutions that help them address critical challenges.
Participating Graduates: Enhanced employability through “learning by doing” and opportunity to co-create innovation for cities. TULIP interns would get exposure in a large number of areas including but not limited to urban planning, urban design, different branches of engineering, information and technology, mobility, finance, social sector issues and environmental issues.

Benefits of 'Tulip'
Selected candidates will have an internship in the Smart Cities Project as well as in Urban Local Bodies / Municipalities and projects in construction companies. At the same time, under the supervision of experienced officers and professionals in Urban Planning and Urban Designing, the candidates will be able to master the profession. This will help them grow in their career. By 2025, the AICTE aims to train about 1 million candidates through internships. That means many people will have better jobs.

Participating Departments / Organizations ..
Several government departments have come forward to offer internships as part of the Tulip scheme. Appoint candidates in accordance with the opportunities available in their respective branches. These include Urban Planning Including Town Planning, Building and Lay Out, Economic and Social Development, Roads and Bridges, Water Supply, Public Health, Sanitation, Conservation and Solid Waste Management, Urban forestry protection of the environment and promotion of the ecological acceptance, Slum Improvement and Upgrades, Promotion of Cultural, Educational and Aesthetic Aspects, Statistical Analysis and Data Analysis, e- governance and transport and urban mobility, Workshop Operation and Maintenance, Store and Logistics Management, Municipal Management, IT and legal departments.

Eligibility:
B.Tech Civil / Electrical / Mechanical / Architecture / IT / Computer Science / Bachelor of Planning / BA / B.Sc - Economics / Sociology / Statistics / Management / Statistics /BBA / BCA / LLB Graduates are eligible for the Internship . Depending on the course, they will be offered an internship of eight weeks to one year. Those who have a gap of 18 months (one year and a half) after the final year results are not eligible.

Selection Process
For this purpose, AICTE has made a special web portal. It provides information on internship opportunities available in states and cities across the country by mentioning the qualifications of the candidates that companies want/need. According to the candidate's details on the website, the interviews are conducted on the basis of qualifications and skills. Offer letters are given for the selected candidates. They are paid the stipend fund by the concerned companies as per local bodies regulations. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs of India, State Governments and AICTE jointly issue the Certificate of Digital Science. Corporate companies are ready to offer placements for the skilled.
