UPSC Civils Eligibility Criteria

  1. Educational Qualification:

    • Applicants must hold a graduate degree from a recognized university.
  2. Age Limit (as of August 1, 2025):

    • Minimum: 21 years
    • Maximum: 32 years
    • Age relaxations apply as per government norms.
  3. Number of Attempts:

    • General candidates: 6 attempts
    • OBC candidates: 9 attempts
    • SC/ST candidates: Unlimited attempts (up to age limit)

Application Fee

  • General/OBC candidates: ₹100
    • Payment can be made through SBI branches via cash deposit or net banking.
  • Female/SC/ST/PwBD candidatesExempted from fee payment.

Examination Structure

The Civil Services Examination will be conducted in two stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Objective Type):

    • For shortlisting candidates for the Main Examination.
  2. Main Examination (Written and Interview):

    • For the final selection to various services and posts.

UPSC Preliminary Examination Details

The Preliminary Exam consists of two compulsory papers (200 marks each).

Paper I: (200 Marks)

Duration: 2 hours
Subjects:

  • Current events of national and international importance.
  • History of India and the Indian National Movement.
  • Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change (non-specialized).
  • General Science.

Paper II: (200 Marks)

Duration: 2 hours
Subjects:

  • Comprehension.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
  • Decision-making and problem-solving.
  • General mental ability.
  • Basic numeracy (Class X level), including data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, etc.).

Important Notes:

  • Both papers will consist of objective-type questions (multiple-choice).
  • General Studies Paper II is a qualifying paper; candidates must secure a minimum of 33% marks.
  • The question papers will be available in Hindi and English.
  • Negative marking is applicable for incorrect answers.
