Visible Spectrum

When a ray of white light (Sunlight) falls on a prism, it disperses into a sequence of colours violet (V), Indigo (I), Blue (B), Green (G) Yellow (Y) Orange (O) and red (R) - VIBGYOR. This continuous sequence of colours is called 'Spectrum' which is visible to human eyes. A spectrum which is visible is called visible spectrum and it is a group of wavelengths or frequencies (as light is considered to be a wave).

All known sources of light emit this spectrum.Visible spectrum is emitted when the excited valance electron in atoms jump back to their normal states. The colour of light emitted by a particular substance is characteristic of atoms of the substance, as we can find in Diwali crackers. The light emitted from the Sun and distant stars is the characteristic of the substances (matter) present in them. The wavelength of the visible spectrum extends from about 0.4 micro meters (mm) to 0.7 (m m) ; (1mm = 10–6m)
