The Karnataka government has declared a holiday for all educational institutions across the state tomorrow following the demise of former Chief Minister and External Affairs Minister, S.M. Krishna. He passed away early this morning at 2:30 AM at the age of 92 after battling health issues for some time.

A Glorious Political Journey
Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, S.M. Krishna began his political journey in 1960. He was first elected as an independent MLA from the Maddur Assembly constituency in 1962 and later joined the Congress party. He served as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004, a period during which Bengaluru gained recognition as the "Silicon Valley of India."

Krishna also served as the Governor of Maharashtra (2004–2008) and as India’s Minister of External Affairs (2009–2012). In 2017, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and later distanced himself from active politics.

Public Mourning and Funeral Arrangements
S.M. Krishna’s mortal remains will be kept at his Bengaluru residence for public homage. On Wednesday, the last rites will be conducted in his hometown, Somanahalli in Mandya district, with full state honors.

Condolences
Leaders across the political spectrum, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and other prominent figures like Mallikarjun Kharge, B.S. Yediyurappa, and Basavaraj Bommai, have expressed their deep sorrow over his passing. They remembered his contributions and offered their condolences to his family.

Statewide Mourning Declared
The Karnataka government has announced a three-day mourning period. During this time, no official celebrations or public events will take place. Schools, colleges, government offices, and private establishments will remain closed on Wednesday as a mark of respect.
