Road to Good Grade in English.
The Summative Assessment question papers will be prepared as per the weightage. We understand that in each paper 37.5% of weightage is given for Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Vocabulary, 25% of weightage is given to Creative Expression. In view of these it is necessary to change the way the students prepare for the examination. Learning by rote memory and mechanical completion of syllabus cannot make the students achieve good grade. The class X is treated as an important class and more focus on examination outcomes. Most of the time the children are confined to reading and re-reading the text and memorizing the answers, which prevent the students from thinking on their own way to construct answers applying their knowledge and experience. There is a stress and anxiety in the entire preparation for class X on the part of the children. We would like to bring a complete planning for the benefit of the students and make them aware the C.C.E. pattern. We put our efforts in bringing down the guidelines which are useful for the children to achieve their target.
Guidelines
paper-I
A. Reading comprehension
A passage is given from A, B, and C Readings of the units. The questions demand answers to the questions like who spoke the words and why? Students should know about the speaker/narrator of the context for all the Readings. There is no need to write complete sentence while answering to questions on textual comprehension.
The answers should be free from errors and should not be lengthy. They should be accurate and reflect the context of the Readings. In some cases, open ended questions may have more than one relevant answer. Any relevant answer can be awarded full marks.
B. Creative Expression
This section carries 10 marks. There is internal choice. The questions under this section are descriptive and creative to test students proficiency in English. Students have to use expressions of personal reflections, thoughts and feelings. They have to use language appropriate to the context with well formed sentences by proper sequencing of ideas and conventions of writing.
There are no fixed answers to these questions hence students have to keep in mind the indicators of the discourses.
C.Grammar: All the questions except editing and cloze test are taken from the text book. They are contextually embeded. Students have to be thorough with all the grammar elements given under the grammar component of all units.
Paper-II
A. Reading comprehension:
Reading data arranged in a tabular form, a pie chart or a tree diagram and answering five comprehensive questions. Reading an unseen passage with five comprehensive questions (Story/essay). Reading a story and arranging the jumbled sentences in a meaningful order.
B. Creative Expression:
There is internal choice to these questions just like paper-I. Based on the given context students have to write a letter or a news report and biographical sketch or a story.
C. Vocabulary:
These questions are completely linked to the ‘A’ reading passage of all the units. It includes synonyms, antonyms, right form of the words, vowel clusters, spelling, categorization of words, writing sentences of your own, one word substitutions etc., Thorough reading of all the passages helps to score good marks in this section.

What we have been following to learn English is time consuming following certain methods for it, which does not help you get proficiency in English.
Following the instructions from the Government of A.P, SCERT has progressed with curriculum change along with change in examination pattern. Now the learning method has changed with a drastically different conceptualization of language and language learning. The state curriculum Frame Work has defined the Academic Standards which cover Reading comprehension, Written discourses, Grammar and Vocabulary, what is conceived as the syllabus is academic standards.
In this connection, studying the text book thoroughly keeping all the Academic Standards makes the students achieve their target. It is also important to notice that the main objective is not only to get a pass in the examination, but also to acquire skills which we can use in our life. Since the examination is the target all the students will be revolving around how to come out successful. In order to achieve the target a meticulous preparation is required. Students should have thorough understanding of the text book with Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation pattern.
Let us have a glance at the C.C.E. pattern. There are two papers in Summative Assessment. Each paper carrying 40 marks.
Paper wise Syllabus
Paper-I
a) All the 3 Readings: (A, B, C) for Comprehension
b) Creative expression: Conversation (or) Description, Diary Entry (or) Script for Speech
c) Grammar: All Grammar topics under A, B, C Readings.
Paper-II
a) Comprehension based on the data, Pie Chart, Bar chart (unseen)
Unseen Passages for Comprehension
b) Creative Expression: Letter writing (or) News Report, Biographical Sketch (or) Hints Story.
c) Vocabulary (Textual) based on ‘A’ Reading.
All the questions are textual based on A Reading.

Students have to prepare for summative assessment basing on this. Much weightage is given to reading comprehension. So prepare accordingly by thorough reading of all the three units (reading A, B, C) to answer these questions. Students should know about the speaker of the context and context for all the readings. Students should write accurate answers as brief as possible. Some times there may be open ended questions which have more than one relevant answer.
At the same time maximum weightage is also given to grammar (37.5%) for 15 marks in Paper-I and vocabulary (37.5%) for 15 marks in Paper-II. The exercises that are given at the end of each unit will help the students to get full marks in these sections.
