NEET UG 2024 Should Not Be Cancelled, No Evidence of Widespread Irregularities: Centre to Supreme Court

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) held on May 5th is facing scrutiny due to allegations of irregularities, including malpractices, question paper leaks, and cheating.

However, the Central government has filed an affidavit with the Supreme Court arguing against cancelling the NEET UG 2024 exam entirely.

Government's Stance:

  • The affidavit emphasizes the absence of concrete evidence for a large-scale breach of confidentiality.
  • Cancelling the exam would jeopardize the interests of numerous honest students who took it fairly.
  • The government prioritizes protecting the rights of these students.

Steps Taken by the Government:

  • A comprehensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is underway to address allegations of impersonation, cheating, and malpractices.
  • A high-level committee has been formed to suggest improvements for smoother and more transparent exam conduct by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
  • The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, has been implemented to tackle cheating and paper leaks in public examinations.

Supreme Court Hearing:

  • The Court will hear arguments on July 8th, focusing on whether the exam was compromised and if a re-test is necessary.
  • Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered the NTA to respond to the allegations but allowed counselling for medical college admissions to proceed.

Candidates have raised concerns about the awarding of compensatory marks for lost time during the exam. The affidavit demonstrates the government's attempt to balance concerns over irregularities with the interests of students who took the exam fairly. The Supreme Court's upcoming hearing will be crucial in determining the future course of action for NEET UG 2024.
