Banothu Kusuma Kumari: Rising Above Child Marriage
Another inspiring story comes from Telangana. Banothu Kusuma Kumari, hailing from a remote area in Bhadradri Kota Gudem district, was born into a family that viewed daughters as a burden. Despite financial difficulties, her parents planned to marry her off at the young age of fourteen. Even after expressing her desire to study, the marriage was arranged.

Taking a Stand: Stopping the Wedding
With remarkable courage, Kusuma defied this tradition. At a young age, she contacted Childline (dial 1098) to stop the wedding. Thanks to ICDS and Child Line intervention, the marriage was called off. Committed to her education and dream of becoming a nurse, Kusuma was placed in a Manuguru children's home. Later, she was enrolled in the Kasturba Gandhi School for Girls.
Balancing Studies and Challenges
During summer breaks, Kusuma continued her studies at the children's home under the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). During the academic year, she resided in college hostels. Her hard work culminated in securing the fourth rank in the state with a remarkable score of 978 marks in the recent Intermediate exams. Additionally, she achieved the distinction of topping her KGBV college.
