Destination Finland - Advanced education systems with high standard of living and quality of life

Finland is situated in northern Europe and neighbours Sweden, Norway and Russia. It is a member of the European Union, a global leader in information technology and also enjoys gender equality and low levels of corruption. Finland has one of the most advanced education systems in the world, and as a result of its innovative mindset and investing in education it is blessed with high standard of living and quality of life.

Degree programmes
Finnish higher education institutions provide over 340 degree programmes at Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctor’s level. All these programmes lead to an official Finnish higher education degree.
Degree education in English is available in various fields of study.
Finnish universities have moved to the degree structure of a three years Bachelor's degree (worth 180 ECTS credits), and two years Master's degree (worth 120 ECTS credits).

Post-Master's level degree at universities are Licentiate (worth 60 ECTS credits) and Doctor’s (worth 240 ECTS credits) degrees. The Doctoral degree normally requires at least four years of full-time study.
The polytechnics (universities of applied sciences, UAS) also have a two-tier degree system with a Bachelor’s degree (worth 210-270 ECTS credits) lasting from 3.5 to 4.5 years. Polytechnic Master’s degrees (worth 60-90 ECTS credits) last from 1 to 1.5 years, and are targeted at people with a Bachelor's Degree and at least 3 years of post graduation work experience.

Finnish higher education institutions use the ECTS system (European Credit Transfer System) in measuring a student’s workload. In this system one full-time academic year is equivalent to 60 higher education credits.

Finnish HEIs issue a Diploma Supplement, a document jointly designed by the EU, the Council of Europe and UNESCO to provide information about the studies completed by the student, the status of the degree and the qualification provided by the degree for further studies and for jobs.

Master's Programmes
There are over 200 Master’s degree programmes available in English. The majority of them are provided by universities, but polytechnics also arrange Master-level degree education in English.
At universities accomplishing a Master’s degree is worth 120 ECTS credits amd takes 2 years of full-time studying.
The degree consists of a major subject, minor subjects, general studies, language and communication studies, and a Master’s thesis. You need to have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in the same or related field of education, and you will also need to prove your English language ability.

Polytechnic Master´s degrees are professionally oriented, they take 1-1.5 years to accomplish, and are worth 60 – 90 ECTS credits. To be eligible to apply for these programmes, you need to hold a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, followed by at least 3 years of work experience.

Studying includes advanced specialist studies, free-choice studies, and a Master´s thesis.

Doctor's programmes
Doctor’s level education is provided by universities. The universities of applied science (=UAS, polytechnic) do not offer post-Master's level degrees. Licentiate and Doctor’s degrees (4 years, 240 ECTS credits) are postgraduate degrees in Finland.

You can start working for a doctorate as soon as you have obtained your Master's degree.
Research and the preparation of a substantial thesis are essential parts of the Doctor’s degree. The doctoral thesis is published and must be defended in a public disputation.
In addition to research, Doctoral programmes include further studies in the chosen discipline and also in the student's specific field of research.

In Finnish universities, Doctoral level studies can be available either as ready-made Doctoral programmes (please consult our Study Programmes Database) or as tailor-made Doctoral level study and research opportunities. Therefore, not all the Doctoral level study and research options are covered in our database. If you wish to work for a doctoral thesis in Finland, you should contact the institution concerned or relevant department directly and make sure that your own field of specialisation is represented there. The university can then assist you in questions regarding when and how to apply.

Study programmes database
International Study Programmes Database is maintained by CIMO. This database provides information about almost 550 study programmes in English offered by Finnish higher education institutions.

Some of the programmes are short courses which can usually be taken only as part of an exchange programme (Non-degree Programmes) - other, broader-based programmes take several years to complete and lead to an official Finnish higher education degree (Degree Programmes).
