In accordance with the provisions stated in Article 371D of the AP Reorganization Act, the admission rules have undergone a significant amendment that will greatly benefit state students. Notably, a noteworthy change has been made to the allocation of MBBS seats in medical colleges established after June 2, 2014. Previously, only 85 percent of these seats were reserved for local students, while the remaining 15 percent remained unreserved, allowing students from both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to compete for them.

However, as per the latest decision, all convener quota MBBS seats in government colleges will be exclusively reserved for state students, effectively increasing the opportunities available to students from Telangana. Moreover, in private colleges, 50 percent of the seats must now be filled through the convener quota.
Unreserved quota in old colleges only
Previously, prior to the formation of Telangana, the state had a total of 20 medical colleges, comprising both government and private institutions. However, thanks to the efforts of the government, the number of medical colleges has now increased to 56, ensuring enhanced access to medical education for aspiring students.

Moreover, the availability of MBBS seats in Telangana has seen a remarkable surge. Previously, the state had only 2,850 MBBS seats, but this number has now expanded to 8,340. Out of the 2,850 seats allocated in the 20 medical colleges at that time, 1,895 MBBS seats were accessible through the convener's quota, encompassing both government and private colleges. Among these seats, 280 were earmarked under the 15 percent unreserved quota.
Previously, Telangana students faced the possibility of losing out on medical seats to students from Andhra Pradesh due to shared opportunities. However, there has been a recent policy change by the government to address this issue. The amended rules now limit the unreserved quota exclusively to the original 20 medical colleges, while the 36 new medical colleges are exempted from the unreserved quota provision.

This change brings excellent news for Telangana students as they will now benefit from an additional 520 medical seats. The restriction of the unreserved quota to the old medical colleges ensures that students from Telangana have a fair chance of securing admissions in the newer establishments, enhancing their opportunities for pursuing a medical education.
From last year, 85 percent of B category belongs to Telangana:
To cater to the needs of Telangana students, a significant proportion of MBBS seats, specifically 85 percent in the MBBS category, were already reserved for them under the local reserve category. This reservation policy has resulted in an impressive addition of 1,300 MBBS seats exclusively for students from the state. However, with the latest decision, an even more substantial increase is expected, as a total of 1,820 additional seats will be made available annually.

The introduction of these 1,820 seats can be likened to the establishment of approximately 20 new medical colleges, indicating a remarkable expansion of educational opportunities for aspiring medical professionals. It is important to note that the All India quota, comprising 15 percent of the seats in the new medical colleges, will remain unchanged. This quota allows admission based on merit for candidates from across the country, including Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
As the government takes proactive measures in establishing medical colleges, it is also committed to securing increased opportunities for Telangana students. This concerted effort aims to fulfill the aspirations of local students who dream of pursuing a career in medicine without having to venture far from their home state.
