Introduction:
B.Tech Dairy Technology deals with the manufacture of milk and milk products including other food products. It is a four year degree course divided in to 8 semesters. In this course the students study major courses on Dairy Engineering (13 courses), Dairy Technology (11 courses), Dairy Business Management (8 courses), Dairy Microbiology (7 courses), Dairy chemistry (6 courses) besides courses on Food Engineering, Food Technology, Food and Industrial Microbiology, Food chemistry etc. The degree also includes study on equipment design suitable to Dairy and Food Industry.
B. Tech (Dairy Technology) in Andhra Pradesh
B. Tech (Dairy Technology) is a 4 year degree course offered by Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University for students qualified in EAMCET (MPC).
The seats are filled by the Convener EAMCET along with other Engineering courses.
The University has two colleges for this degree
1) College of Dairy Technology, Tirupati, Chittoor Dist.
2) Dairy Technology Programme, Kamareddy, Nizamabad Dist.
No. of seats:
No of seats in each of the above colleges - 25. Besides, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi will allot 5 seats on all India basis.
Course Content:
The course is taught in 8 semesters. In the 7th semester, the students undergo hands on training and experiential learning where they will learn dairy business and operation of dairy plant. They choose one milk product and run business starting from procurement of milk and raw materials, planning, manufacture of milk product, sale of the product and accounting. This gives them confidence for self employment and go for their own dairy business.
The 8th semester is for in-plant training where the students are deputed to major dairy plants of Andhra Pradesh and they learn how to operate the milk plants, prepare milk products and manage the factories. That means the student will be studying subjects in 3 years and one year completely for training in business and dairy plants.
During the 8th semester the students are paid a stipend of Rs. 5000/- per month.
Other Institutes offering the Course
National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) Karnal, Haryana and its Southern Regional Campus at Bangalore offer B.Tech. in Dairy Technology, Master’s and Ph.D. programmes in Dairying. Admissions to these courses are through the All India Entrance Examinations conducted by the ICAR, New Delhi. Some state universities and a few institutions offer B.Tech. or B.Sc. Dairy Science and Technology courses. In most of the states, the admission is made on the basis of entrance examination.
Higher Education Opportunities
B.Tech Dairy Technology graduates can go for higher studies like PG and PhD in food technology courses, MBA, Dairy Engineering, Dairy Technology, Dairy Microbiology etc.
