Engineering Seat Demand Declining in Telangana – Key Reasons Explained!

Will Engineering Seats See Lower Demand This Year?
The demand for engineering seats in Telangana is expected to decline due to several factors, including a lack of job opportunities, the rise of new specialized courses, and shifting student interests. This trend may significantly impact admissions for the upcoming academic year.
Why is Demand for Engineering Seats Declining?
-
Non-Local Quota Removal:
- Previously, Andhra Pradesh (AP) students had a 15% non-local quota in Telangana engineering colleges, as per Presidential orders issued during the state bifurcation.
- This provision ended last year, and the Telangana government plans to remove the quota entirely for the upcoming academic session.
- Every year, around 50,000 students from AP compete for engineering seats in Telangana, with 16,000 seats under the non-local quota and the rest through the general category.
-
Impact on AP Students:
- If AP students are not granted local status, they cannot claim seats under either category, leaving only management quota as an option.
- The Telangana government must issue a Government Order (GO) for the removal of the non-local quota, after which the EAPCET notification can be released.
-
Declining Applications & Seat Increase:
- Last year, 2.40 lakh students applied for EAPCET engineering admissions, with 1.80 lakh qualifying for seats.
- Telangana currently has 174 engineering colleges with a total of 1,12,069 seats (70% under convenor quota and 30% under management quota).
- The AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) approved an additional 3,000 seats last year, further contributing to a potential oversupply in the upcoming academic year.

Which Engineering Courses Remain in High Demand?
Despite the overall decline, Computer Science and Emerging Technologies continue to attract students. Around 58% of engineering seats in Telangana are in:
- Computer Science & Engineering (CSE)
- Data Science & AI
- Cybersecurity
- Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI & ML)

Legal & Administrative Challenges
The non-local quota was initially set for 10 years under Presidential Orders. Since last year, it has been in limbo, as the Telangana government has yet to formally notify the President’s Office for approval to remove it.
Officials warn that without this approval, the decision could face legal challenges, potentially delaying the EAMCET admission process.
Government Action Pending:
Authorities are awaiting official directives on quota removal before releasing the EAPCET 2025 notification. The Higher Education Council has already informed the government, and further decisions will be made accordingly.
💬 Prof. V. Balakista Reddy, Chairman, Telangana Higher Education Council, stated:
"We can issue the EAMCET notification only after the GO for non-local quota removal is released. The final decision will depend on government policies."
