Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering involves the study and application of engineering processes for diagnosis and therapy.
Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a rapidly changing interdisciplinary domain, in which each branch of engineering interacts with a number of other disciplines to yield a fundamental understanding of health maintenance processes and improved diagnosis, optimal interventional (surgical, Therapeutic & rehabilitative) procedures, prosthesis and organ assist systems, health care systems performance and econometrics.

Undergraduate academic program includes the following subjects: B.E (Biomedical Engineering)
  • Basic Engineering-science courses(I-Year Common as other branches)
  • Medical Sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry).
  • Engineering technology courses(C, C++, Electronic Engineering courses, Signal Processing, Micro controllers and applications, Image processing, analog and Digital circuits, data Base management systems).
  • Clinical Sciences courses (Neurology, Nephrology, Orthopedics, Gastroenterology, Pathology, blood bank, Cardiology, Imaging sciences, Radiology, Radiotherapy, Medicine & Surgery).
  • Biomedical Engineering courses (Transducers and Bio sensors engineering, medical Instrumentation, Biomedical Equipment, Advanced Medical Equipment, Medical Embedded systems, Medical imaging Techniques, Medical Image processing, Biomedical Signal Processing, Rehabilitation Engineering, Bio mechanics, Biomaterials, Tele medicine, and Nanotechnology).

Higher Education

Those who take a B.Tech. degree in Biomedical Engineering can do the M.Tech in Bio-Materials, Medical Imaging, Bio-Mechanics, Orthopedics Surgery, Genetic Engineering, Bio-Instrumentation, Cellular and Tissue Engineering etc.

Some of the institutions offering M.Tech degree courses are IIT, Kanpur: M.Tech. and Ph.D. courses in bioengineering; Manipal Universityl: M.Tech, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT University), Vellore: M.Tech Pune Institute of Engineering and Technology: M.Tech in Biomedical Instrumentation In abroad, most of the universities in USA, Germany, Sweden, Nether lands, UK, Switzerland offer MS in Biomedical Engineering

Research Opportunities
IISC, IIT’s, CSIR institutes, CCMB, IICT, NIMHANS(DRDO), Universities, DEBEL, Many of the universities in abroad are offering research positions in Biomedical Engineering.

Skills required:

Biomedical Engineers should have communication and interpersonal skills, hardware skills with a grip on electronic subjects, an interest towards medical related equipment.

Job Profiles
An ideal biomedical team in a hospital consists of a team of five people with In charge and two Biomedical Engineers and two technicians with Diploma eligibility. Their activities include testing biomedical equipment to determine whether it is safe, efficient and effective, installing biomedical equipment and then adjusting, maintaining or repairing it and collaborating with others in the medical field. Their roles include Clinical Engineers, Biomaterials Engineers, Professors/Teachers, Research Scientists, Biomechanics Engineers, Bioinstrumentation Engineer etc.

Salary
The starting salary of a Biomedical Engineer is around Rs. 15000 pm and on experience one would get Rs. 80000 to 1 lakh. In the medical device companies, the growth is rapid for engineers in terms of salary and positions
Osmania University is the first University to start Biomedical Engineering at undergraduate level in the country. The course was started in 1982 at under graduate level and also started Post Graduate program in Medical Electronics in the academic year 2006.

Outside AP, some of the IITs like Kanpur, Hyderabad, BHU offer this course. Some other major institutes offering the course are Manipal University, Alpha College of Engineering, Chennai, SRM Engineering College, SASTRA University, Amrita University etc.

Other famous institutes
  • Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore
  • Anna University
  • IIT Kanpur
  • IIT-BHU
  • International Centre for Applied Sciences, Manipal
  • NIT Raipur, Rourkela
  • VIT university, Vellore
