Telangana Education Reforms: Key Areas of Discussion

  • Regulation of Coaching Centers: The subcommittee stressed the need for regulations to govern coaching centers, focusing on student safety and fee control. They plan to implement guidelines formulated by the central government for this purpose.
  • Fees in Private Schools: A committee is being considered to regulate fees in private schools and intermediate colleges.
  • Improving Government School Standards: The subcommittee suggested that by enhancing the quality of education in government schools, more students would choose them over private schools. They asked officials to identify areas where improvements are needed.
  • Merging Upper Primary and High Schools: The subcommittee proposed merging upper primary and high schools to avoid wastage of human resources.
  • Concerns Over Declining Higher Education Standards: The subcommittee expressed concern over the state's low ranking in educational standards and recommended revising the curriculum of BA courses to better prepare students for the job market.

Upgrading Polytechnic Colleges:

The subcommittee also discussed the plan to upgrade nine polytechnic colleges into engineering colleges. These colleges are located in Masab Tank, Ramanthapur, Warangal, Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Kothagudem, Secunderabad, and Quli Qutb Shah Polytechnic College.

Minister Seethakka's Suggestions:

Minister Seethakka suggested incorporating lessons on harassment against women into 5th and 6th-grade textbooks. She also urged senior officials to reflect on why students prefer private colleges despite the presence of talented teachers in government institutions.
