This is a rise from 46th place last year, driven by significant improvements across various indicators, notably a remarkable 58-place jump in the number of PhD-qualified staff.

However, the news is not entirely positive for Indian institutions. Several prominent universities, including IIT Bombay and IISc, have experienced a decline in their rankings.

IIT Bombay, which previously held the top spot for India, now ranks second, slipping from 40th to 48th regionally.

Other universities, such as IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IISc, and IIT Kanpur, have also faced declines, with IIT Madras falling from 53rd to 56th, IISc and IIT Kanpur dropping to 62nd and 67th, respectively, and IIT Kharagpur experiencing a minor decline from 59th to 60th.

The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2025 evaluates universities based on factors such as academic reputation, employer reputation, research output, student-to-faculty ratio, international diversity, citations per faculty member, proportion of international faculty, proportion of international students, sustainability, employment outcomes, and international research network. These criteria reflect the overall standing of institutions in Asia, considering both academic and global engagement.
