To be a journalist, you should primarily have a nose for news and command over language. There are different roles in the field of journalism. The two most important of them are reporting and editing. While a reporter is on field gathering news, an editor compiles the news and makes it presentable. Then, there are also roles like writing reviews and articles on specialised areas like technology and art.

So, first take stock of your interests and strengths. Consider your aspirations and aptitude and decide the role you want to assume. Based on the kind of role, you may even have the choice to choose an area to deal with. Some of the areas are politics, sports, entertainment, arts and science.

Once you have made your choice, find out what kind of skills and qualifications the role demands. In case it demands a qualification in journalism, you can pursue a course in distance, part-time or full-time mode. Osmania University, Hyderabad offers two-year integrated course, Bachelor + Master of Communication and Journalism. The eligibility criterion is BA/ B. Sc/ B.Com with 40 per cent marks in Part II. The admission is based on performance at entrance test.
