National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission conducts National Eligibility Test to determine eligibility for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship.

The eligibility criterion for appearing for the NET is at least 55 per cent marks in master’s degree or equivalent examination from universities/ institutions recognised by the UGC.

Candidates must appear for the test in the subject of their post-graduation or in a related subject (if their subject of post graduation is not in the list of optional papers provided). The list of optional papers and the syllabus can be obtained on the UGC website. 

The test consists of three papers. Paper-I tests the teaching and research aptitude of the candidate. It assesses the candidate’s reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness. Paper-II has short questions from the optional paper. Papers I and II carry 100 marks each and are of the multiple-choice type. Paper-III has descriptive questions from the subject the candidate selects and carries 200 marks. The minimum qualifying mark for paper I and II is 40 percent and on an aggregate 50 per cent. The time duration is 1 hour 15 minutes. The time duration for the third paper is two-and-a-half hours.

The test is conducted twice a year generally in the months of June and December. The notification is published in Employment News, in the months of March and September.
