UPSC Combined Defence Services Examination for Engineers

The Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment into the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Officers Training Academy (OTI), Naval Academy (NA) and Air Force Academy (AFA). The notification for the examination is usually released in the months of August and March, and the examinations are conducted in February and August. Successful candidates are admitted into the respective Academies after an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

Age Groups:
Indian Military Academy: 19-24 Years
Naval Academy: 19-22 Years
Air Force Academy: 19-23 Years
Officers’ Training Academy: 19-25 Years

Educational Qualifications for CDS Exam:
  • Indian Military Academy and Officers’ Training Academy: Degree of a recognized University or equivalent
  • Naval Academy: Bachelor of Engineering or B.Sc. with Physics and Mathematics
  • Air Force Academy: Bachelor of Engineering, B.Sc. with Physics and/or Mathematics
Scheme of Examination:
Written Examination patterns of different academies are as following -
  1. For Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy
    1. English (Objective type): 100 Marks
    2. General Knowledge (Objective type): 100 Marks
    3. Elementary Mathematics (Objective type): 100 Marks
    Total: 300 Marks
  2. For Officers’ Training Academy
    1. English (Objective type): 100 Marks
    2. General Knowledge (Objective type): 100 Marks
Total: 200 Marks

Marks for SSB Interviews
IMA, NA and AFA: 300 marks
OTA: 200 Marks
