The engineering aspirants must collaborate with their peers - VS Rao, BITS Hyderabad Director

VS Rao, BITS Hyderabad Director speaks about engineering academics and industry interaction, skills and job trends.
Why is there a gap between industry requirements and academic delivery?
Our present curriculum is old and is not revised to be in line with the industry requirements; it lacks in providing hands on experience to students. The curriculum should provide opportunity to ‘live problems’, which are of direct interest to the industry. To bridge this gap, students should go for internships; colleges should bring some projects form the industry and involve the students and the faculty. It is also advisable to invite the industry people to come and deliver speeches in the campuses.

What skills should a student have for choosing a profession like engineering?
The student should have analytical skills, the ability to synthesize and good communication skills.

How is the job trend in the coming years?
Job opportunities are going forward in an economy like India. We are growing at the rate for 5% while others are not doing well. The economy is going to bounce back; it will provide great opportunities for the engineers.

Your advice to the engineering aspirants...
The engineering aspirants must pursue their education with quite seriousness, hard work, collaborate with their peers, and learn together. This would help in understanding the problems in a better way and arriving at a solution.
