IIT Delhi is a great institution, and I consider it to be my honor to lead such an institution as its Director.
How useful is the research in IITs to the common man of this country?
The research done in IITs needs to look at the problems faced by the common man, be it in security, healthcare, agriculture or environment. A Multi-disciplinary research culture is a key requirement when it comes to addressing such problems.
Does IITs address social problems faced by the society?
IIT Delhi is a great institution having many strengths and with some of the finest brains among its faculty, staff and students. The key is to build multi-disciplinary teams with focused objectives and help deliver solutions to the problems faced by the society. This should not however be at the cost of basic research, as basic research today can become applied research at a future point of time.
We must encourage IIT graduates to do an internship in rural areas, to understand the problems faced by them. Many students from elite American universities come to India and spend time in remote villages and take back many research problems. There is an urgent need to expose our students to the problems faced by the society.
The finest brains trained in IITs are working overseas. What can be done to stop this brain drain?
We need to focus on incubating more and more companies out of our campuses. Many of our students coming out of IITs need to become job providers rather than job seekers. There is an urgent need to develop an eco-system for technology incubation on our campuses.
Technology companies generate wealth, and can accelerate economy in a major way. For example, if you boost the agricultural productivity levels with affordable innovation, that is wealth creation. These are the kind of problems IIT engineers need to be working on. A close interaction with industries will definitely help in bringing focus to our research.
How different will be your tenure as Director, IIT Delhi?
There are many things I would like to accomplish in the next few years at IIT Delhi. You will start seeing many changes at IIT Delhi.
What is your advice to budding engineers?
You are capable of achieving more than what you think you can. Give your best to whatever you do, develop a passion for your work, and aim high. There will be no looking back.

Prior to his appointment, as Director, IIT Delhi Dr. Rao is an Institute Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay and the Chief Investigator for the Centre of Excellence in Nanoelectronics project at IIT Bombay. Prof. Rao received the coveted Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Engineering Sciences awarded by the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Govt of India in 2005 for his work on Electron Devices.
