Engineering books in regional languages
All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) Engineering, Undergraduate, first Year Degree Books are produced in regional languages. In addition, it translates diploma textbooks into regional languages. Has already translated and prepared 218 textbooks with 226 authors in various regional languages. AICTE said on Twitter that language would no longer be a barrier for those pursuing engineering education.
It is learnt that as part of the new education policy, the Central Government has taken steps to provide engineering education in 11 regional languages of the country from this academic year. It has decided to provide engineering education in Hindi, Kannada, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi and Oriya. However, due to the unavailability of textbooks related to the engineering syllabus in the regional languages and the lack of staff to teach them, the colleges in the respective states are not willing to provide engineering in the regional language medium.
Fourteen engineering colleges in 5 regional languages in 8 states across the country have come forward to offer some B. Tech courses in regional languages. Anna University in Tamil Nadu has decided to offer Civil and Mechanical Engineering courses in Tamil. A college in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh has obtained permission from AICTE to offer some courses in Telugu medium. AICTE allows students pursuing engineering education in these regional language media to write tests in either the language or English.
