  • Queen’s Club Championships: Murray returns after 3 years, wins 1st match
    Former world No. 1 Andy Murray made a confident start in the Queen’s Club Championships grass court tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win over world No. 46 Benoit Paire of France to enter second round.

    The five-time former champion in the ATP 500 event here needed just 64 minutes to seal the victory in his first grass court match since 2018 Eastbourne.

    Murray will face world No. 9 and the top seed Matteo Berrettini in the second round, after the Italian powered past countryman Stefano Travaglia 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4).

    Murray was side-lined for much of 2019 and 2020 due to the surgery.

  • Olympians could be kicked out of Japan for violating COVID-19 rules
    According to a rule book released foreign athletes competing at this summer’s Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics could be kicked out of Japan if they violate regulations aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus infections.

    The third and the newest version of the “playbook” with various COVID-19 countermeasures said athletes also face other penalties for not complying with them, including a withdrawal of accreditation and the right to participate in the games, as well as facing a fine. The rules will take effect on July 1.

  • Hockey India announces women’s squad for Tokyo Olympics
    The Hockey India has announced a 16-member national women’s hockey team for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

    The team is a blend of youth and experience. However, the team captain will be announced later. This will be the women’s third appearance at the Olympic Games. India earlier competed in the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games and 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

    ICC Elite Panel match referee Chris Broad will oversee the World Test Championship final. ICC Elite Panel’s Richard Illingworth and Michael Gough will be the on-field umpires. Richard Kettle borough, also a member of the Elite Panel, will be the TV umpire while Alex Wharf of the ICC international panel of umpires will be the fourth official.

  • Five Indian women cricketers join ‘The Hundred women’s competition’
    5 Indian women cricketers, Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Smriti Mandhana, and Deepti Sharma, have joined The Hundred women’s competition.
    Shafali Verma has joined Birmingham Phoenix as a replacement for Sophie Devine while Harman preet Kaur, who will star in the opening match at the Kia Oval on July 21, has joined Manchester Originals.
    Jemimah Rodrigues will feature for Northern Superchargers while Smriti Mandhana will represent Southern Brave. Deepti Sharma has joined England captain Heather Knight at London Spirit. The tournament, to be organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board and played in a 100-ball format, will see some of the best women cricketers from around the world compete for different franchises.

    In the field of five Portuguese competitors, 23-year-old Chopra's best throw was 83.18m, which turned out to be a gold medal winning effort as the other competitors failed cross the 80m mark. Chopra's opening throw was 80.71m while his second and third attempts were no throws. He failed to get a good rhythm in the fourth and could only record a throw of 78.50m. His fifth attempt too was no throw while the last and sixth throw was 83.18m. Chopra has a season best of 88.07m recorded in March in Patiala.
    Lisbon competition marked Chopra's return to foreign soil after nearly 18 months.

    Tokyo Olympic Games bound wrestler Vinesh Phogat won the women’s 53kg freestyle gold with an 8-0 win over Khrystyna Bereza of Ukraine at the Poland Ranking Series in Warsaw. With less than 50 days to go for the Olympic Games to begin, Vinesh looked strong in defence and swift in attacks and counter-attacks.
    The gold-winning effort of Vinesh is likely to improve her seeding in the 53kg freestyle event at the Olympics, to be held from July 23 to August 8. Khrystyna settled for silver.

  • Central Athlete Injury Management System launched for training of athletes for 2024 Olympics
    Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has launched the Central Athlete Injury Management System (CAIMS) for streamlining the sports medicine and rehabilitation support offered to the athletes. It aims to provide the best of sports injury management support nearest to the athlete’s geographical location. CAIMS will help to standardize appropriate injury treatment protocol for athletes across the country.
    It will start with support for athletes who are a part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) development group expected to participate in 2024 and beyond.

    In French Open Tennis, Novak Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal to reach Men’s Singles final. Novak Djkovic stuns Nadal 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-2 to enter his sixth French Open final. He will now face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final tomorrow. A masterclass from the Serb as he becomes the only player to beat Nadal in French Open twice. It is also only the third time the Spaniard has been beaten at the clay court Grand Slam since making his debut in 2005.
    He also becomes the first player in history to defeat Nadal in a Paris semi-final, besting the Spaniard 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2 to reach the title match. It will be the 29th career Grand Slam final for Dj

  • FIH world rankings: Indian men’s team maintain 4th position, women’s team hold on to 9th
    In Hockey, Indian men’s team maintained their fourth position while women’s team held to ninth position in the latest International Hockey Federation world rankings.
    Despite missing the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro- League series in Great Britain, Spain and Germany in April and May, the Indian men’s team maintained its fourth spot.
    Belgium, the reigning world and European champions, lead the table, followed by the 2019 FIH Hockey Pro-League winners, Australia. The Netherlands are placed third.
    Germany has jumped to fifth place due to their recent performances in the FIH Pro-League while Great Britain has also moved up a spot to the sixth position. Argentina, the reigning Olympic champions, is seventh. New Zealand is eighth, Spain ninth while Canada is 10th.

    In the women’s category, India is ranked ninth. The Netherlands women’s team is leading while Argentina is second.
    Australia climbed to third position while Germany slipped to fourth position with 2115.185 points. Great Britain is ranked fifth.

    BCCI Ethics Officer finds Rupa Gurunath guilty of ‘Conflict of Interest’
    The BCCI Ethics Officer Justice (Retd) D.K. Jain has found former Board president N. Srinivasan’s daughter and Tamil Nadu Cricket Association president Rupa Gurunath guilty of “Conflict of Interest” in an order passed yesterday.
    Rupa, the first woman president of a BCCI affiliated unit, is a full-time Director of India Cements Limited. She has been found guilty of indirect conflict of interest for ICL’s close association with Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited.

  • Shafali Verma continues to top ICC women’s T20I batting rankings
    Teenage India batswoman Shafali Verma continues to top the ICC women’s T20I batting rankings. The 17-year-old player, being touted as the successor to Smriti Mandhana, has 776 points and is leading second-placed Beth Mooney of Australia by 32 points. India’s T20 vice-captain, Smriti, is fourth with 693 points. Jemimah Rodriques is the third Indian in the top 10 of the T20I batting rankings with 640 points.
    The notable surprise in the list is Scotland all-rounder Kathryn Bryce, who has become the first batswoman from her country to make it into the top 10. India also has two bowlers in the top 10 list, with off-spinner Deepti Sharma at the sixth spot with 705 points and left-arm spinner RadhaYadav with 702 points at the seventh. England’s Sophie Ecclestone leads the rankings with 799 points.

  • Which country will host Copa America for 2nd consecutive time?
    In football, Brazil will host Copa America for the second consecutive time after Colombia and Argentina were stripped of hosting rights for the tournament. South American soccer body CONMEBOL announced the decision hours after it ruled out Argentina amid an increase in COVID-19 cases in the country. Colombia was removed as co-host on May 20 as street protests against President Ivn Duque rocked the nation. South American teams are already training for the tournament and two rounds of World Cup qualifiers are starting this week.
    Like other continental tournaments, Copa America was initially scheduled for 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced its postponement.
