IPS Officer Praveen Sood appointed as next Director of CBI

  • IPS officer Praveen Sood has been appointed as the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years.
  • Mr. Sood is currently serving as the Director General of Police of Karnataka. He will succeed incumbent CBI Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal.

Government bans import of 928 items to promote domestic defence industry

  • The Defence Ministry has imposed phased ban on the import of 928 military items to promote self-reliance in the defence manufacturing sector. The Ministry yesterday announced fourth positive indigenisation list in continuation of the first three such lists, which contained a total of 1,238 items.
  • The first three lists were announced in December 2021, March 2022 and August 2022.
  • The fresh list of 928 military items, including line replacement units, sub-systems and spares, which came under a phased import ban between December 2023 and December 2029.
  • In statement the Ministry of Defence said that, the 928 items in the fourth list, with import substitution value of  715 crore rupees, will be procured from the Indian industry. 
  • It added that of the 1,238 earlier items, 310 have been indigenised so far.  It covers items used in fighter planes, trainer aircraft, warships and different types of ammunition.
  • The Ministry said the Defence PSUs will undertake indigenisation of 928 listed items through different routes under 'Make' category and in-house development.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan to participate in Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue in US

  • Chief of the Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan will participate in the Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue in the United States today. Defence Ministry said, the three day event is beginning in California.
  • Senior military commanders from Quad member countries will meet in Sunnylands in California to attend the high-profile meeting on Indo-Pacific Security.
  • General Chauhan is scheduled to interact with top military officers from US, Japan and Australia.
  • This is the first visit of Chief of the Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan outside the country since he took over as the CDS in October last year.

MoS L. Murugan to lead Indian delegation to Cannes Film Festival

  • Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan will lead an Indian delegation to Cannes International Film Festival from 16th to 27th May. He will be accompanied by filmmaker Guneet Monga of The Elephant Whisperers fame, Indian actresses Manushi Chillar, Esha Gupta and acclaimed Manipuri actor KangabamTomba. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur will address the inaugural session through a video message to showcase India as a global hub for content creation.
  • The India Pavilion is being conceptualised and designed by National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad with the theme - ‘Showcasing India’s Creative Economy’ to the global community. The pavilion design has been inspired by the Saraswati Yantra, the abstract representation of goddess Saraswati.
  • Four Indian films,' including Kanu Behl’s Agra and Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy, have made it to the official selection in the Cannes Film Festival. Apart from these, many Indian films will be screened in Marche du Films. A restored Manipuri film ‘Ishanhou’ will be showcased in the ‘Classics’ section.

Nepal's former Deputy PM Top Bahadur Rayamajhi arrested

  • The absconded leader of Communist Party (UML) and former Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal, Bahadur Rayamajhi, was arrested from Budhanilkantha of Kathmandu yesterday.
  • Rayamajhi has been arrested for his alleged role in the fraud of millions of rupees by duping Nepali citizens with the promises of sending them to the United States in the cover of Bhutanese refugees.
  • Earlier, Indrajit Rai, the advisor to former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, was arrested on the charge of his involvement in the scam. 
  • Police have already made high-profile arrests over their alleged connections to the scam.  So far 13 people have been arrested over the scam.

ECONOMY
EU carbon tax will impact only 1.8% of Indian exports

  • The world’s first carbon tax, approved by the European Parliament last month, could impact no more than 1.8% or $8 billion of India’s exports, according to an internal assessment by the commerce ministry.
  • After being passed by lawmakers of the 27-nation bloc, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) Bill is expected to come into force this month, empowering the bloc to charge a Carbon Border Tax (CBT) on imports of steel, aluminium, fertilizer, electricity, cement and hydrogen from January 2026.

India, Canada may ink mini-trade deal

  • India and Canada may sign an interim free trade deal by this year, the precursor to a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), officials said after commerce minister Piyush Goyal and his Canadian counterpart Mary Ng reviewed the progress of ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement between the two countries a day before the CEOs roundtable, held in Toronto.
  • India and Canada are negotiating a two-step FTA – first an interim deal covering goods, services, rules of origin, technical barriers to trade, and dispute settlement by this year; followed by the India-Canada CEPA to cover other bilateral issues of strategic importance, the officials added, requesting anonymity.
  • According to the officials, the interim negotiation with Canada – also called the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) -- is “progressing fast” and the two countries may sign a deal in the second half of this year. EPTA may also cover areas such as small and medium enterprises and it will eventually take shape of a comprehensive FTA, they added. The seventh round of negotiations for EPTA was held in Ottawa last month.

Indian shooters Hriday Hazarika and Nancy Mandhotra bag silver medals in 10-meter air rifle event at ISSF World Cup 2023

  • Indian shooters Hriday Hazarika and Nancy Mandhotra have bagged silver medals in the men’s and women’s 10 meter air rifle events, at the ongoing ISSF World Cup 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
  • It was the first-ever ISSF World Cup medal for 21-year-old Hriday Hazarika as well as 19-year-old Nancy Mandhotra. Hazarika made it to the men’s 10m air rifle final.
  • The Baku meet is the penultimate stage of the ISSF World Cup for rifle and pistol shooters.
  • The final stage will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil before the ISSF World Championships in November at Doha.
