NATIONAL
Overall coal production increases by 61 MT during 2021-22; Power Sector coal imports come down by 40 %.

  • The Coal Ministry has said that coal imports declined to 209 Million Tonnes in 2021-22 against 248 Million Tonnes in 2019-20.
  • It said that power sector coal imports came down by forty per cent. Overall coal production has increased by 61 Million Tonnes during 2021-22.
  • The Ministry informed that the decline in coal import during 2021-22 is largely due to decrease in imports by the Power Sector which came down from 45 Million Tonnes in 2020-21 to 27 Million Tonnes in 2021-22. It further informed that the total thermal power generation in the country increased to 1,115 Billion Units in 2021-22 from 1,032 Billion Units in 2020-21.

India, Israel adopt vision statement to pave way for defence cooperation in future

  • India and Israel discussed key issues pertaining to defence cooperation and global and regional scenarios.
  • Both the countries have adopted a vision statement which will pave the way for defence cooperation in future.
  •  He said, there is a broad consensus between the two countries on further strengthening the bilateral strategic and defence cooperation

India and Senegal sign MoUs for cultural exchange, cooperation in youth matters and visa free regime for officials

  • India and Senegal have signed three MoUs for cultural exchange, cooperation in youth matters and visa-free regime for officials.
  •  The MoUs were signed after delegation-level talks between Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu and President of Senegal MackySall in the capital city of Dakar.
  • During the meeting, Mr. Naidu assured Senegal of India's continued commitment to support the socio-economic development of that country through all means, bilateral, regional and international frameworks.

Sachin Tendulkar to continue as UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador for 20th year

  • Sachin Tendulkar will continue as United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) ‘Goodwill Ambassador’ for a record 20th year, working for the welfare of underprivileged children.
  • The iconic cricketer has been associated with UNICEF for a long for various causes. In his almost two-decade-long partnership with UNICEF, he has been vital in furthering the campaigns, especially the ones aimed at providing a better future for underprivileged children.
  • In 2003, he was chosen to take lead in the initiative to create awareness and promote polio prevention in India.
  • Later in 2008, he was roped in to create and promote hygiene and sanitation among communities and has been continuing to do so over the years.
  • In 2013, he was appointed UNICEF Ambassador for South Asia to advocate good hygiene and sanitation across the region.
  • In 2019, he went on a three-day trip to Nepal to raise awareness for UNICEF Nepal’s ‘Bat for Brain Development’ campaign.

US Frontier overtakes Japan’s Fugaku as World’s most powerful Supercomputer

  • According to the 59th edition of the Top500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers unveiled by Germany, ORNL’s Supercomputer Frontier from the US, a supercomputer built using Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) architecture and equipped with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) processors, outperformed Japan’s Supercomputer Fugaku to become the world’s fastest supercomputer.
  • Frontier’s nearest competitor, Fugaku, has a performance score of 442 petaflops on the Linpack benchmark, a standard for officially ranking global, publicly disclosed supercomputers. While Fugaku was based on Arm’s core designs, US’s Frontier is powered by AMD.

World Bicycle Day 2022

  • World Bicycle Day is observed on June 3, since 2018.  The day is marked to spread awareness about the benefits of using a bicycle.
  • According to the United Nations, the day highlights the “uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle”.  United Nations passed the resolution during its 72nd Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
  • World Bicycle Day talks about the “benefits of using the bicycle — a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.”

SPORTS
India defeat Japan 1-0 to win bronze at Asia Cup Men's Hockey

  • In Asia Cup men’s hockey 2022 at Jakarta, team India produced a gritty performance to beat Japan 1-0 and claimed the bronze medal today. An early goal from Rajkumar Pal and some fine defending works was enough for this young Indian side to overcome Japan in an engrossing game. 
  • India captain BirendraLakra wins the player of the match award for his sturdy defensive work.
