- The seventh round of negotiations for a potential India-Peru Trade Agreement took place in New Delhi from April 8th to 11th, 2024. Both sides emphasized understanding each other's priorities and concerns to ensure negotiations are rooted in mutual respect and benefit.
Building on Historical Ties
- Mr. Sunil Barthwal, representing India, highlighted the long-standing relationship between India and Peru, dating back to the 1960s. He emphasized the importance of these talks in resuming negotiations for a stronger economic partnership.
- Around sixty delegates from both countries participated, achieving significant progress on the agreement's text.
Growing Trade Partnership
- Peru has become India's third-largest trading partner in Latin America and the Caribbean. Bilateral trade has seen a significant rise in the past two decades.
- The next round of negotiations is scheduled for June 2024. To address any remaining issues, intersessional negotiations will be held virtually in the lead-up to the June meeting.
