Bhutan Honors Prime Minister Modi with Highest Civilian Award

New Delhi, India: In a historic ceremony at Thimphu's Tendrelthang, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, the highest civilian decoration bestowed by Bhutan. This prestigious award marks the first time a foreign leader has received this honor.

The announcement of the award was made by the King of Bhutan himself during the nation's 114th National Day celebrations in December 2021.  It recognizes Prime Minister Modi's significant contributions to strengthening the longstanding friendship between India and Bhutan, and his leadership focused on the well-being of his people.

The citation accompanying the award further highlights India's emergence as a global power under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, and celebrates the unique bond shared by Bhutan and India.  His leadership is credited with transforming India and raising its moral authority and global influence. Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the award as an honor bestowed upon all 1.4 billion citizens of India. He emphasized the special and enduring ties that unite the two nations.

Established as the pinnacle of Bhutan's honor system, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo recognizes lifetime achievements and takes precedence over all other decorations and medals awarded in the country.
