As India is moving towards a knowledge society with proliferation of learning and research institutes the demand and importance of library science is growing rapidly. Consequently, job opportunities for librarians are on the upswing. Librarianship is as profession is concerned with storage, organizing and maintenance of books, papers and journals. Nevertheless, with the advent of information technology and computers the traditional concept of is being redesigned to include not only books and other printed materials but also new tools of information like CD-ROM, internet, virtual libraries etc. With the growth in the number of institutions of learning and those imparting professional training all over the country the need and importance of libraries is also growing. Therefore, Librarianship is a growing field, which has by now attained the status of a separate discipline in the universe of knowledge. It presents challenges and interesting situations to library personnel. The management of these libraries needs persons with good academic and professional qualifications. Proficiency in one of the natural sciences, social sciences or humanities is helpful in the professional development of a Librarian. Basically, a good librarian should have keen interest in books and varieties of topics, high organizing ability, excellent communication skills and customer service attitude.
Course Details:
The minimum qualification required to get an admission in Library Science is graduation. Graduates from any stream can go for Bachelors degree in library science the duration of which is one year. In degree the programme subjects include library administration (including acquisition and verification); budgeting, personnel management; cataloguing; networking, automation; information sources; conservation of material; research methodology; and public libraries and academic libraries.
After that, students can go for Masters Degree in library science, which is of one-year duration. Some students who are interested in higher studies and research activities can also go for M.Phil and PhD in this field. There are also diploma and certificate courses in Library Science.

Courses from NISCAIR and DRTC:
NISCAIR was set up in 2002 by merging Indian National Science Documentation (INSDOC) and the National Institute of Science Communication (NISCOM). The computer and information technology is now being widely used in libraries and information centers to process, store, retrieve and disseminate information. NISCAIR under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi conducts a two-year programme leading to the award of Associateship in Information Science (AIS) and the Documentations Research and Training Centre (DRTC) at the Indian Statistical Institute (Bangalore) offer Associateship in Documentation and Information Science (ADIS).This award is also recognised as equivalent to MLISc degree. These two courses enjoy a good reputation in the employment market. In view of the increasing use of computer and information technology in libraries, several universities in India also have started various courses focusing primarily on information technology and computer.

Course nomenclature and qualifying marks in different courses differ from university to university. Earlier the subject was called library science but now due to information explosion professionals handle information. So library science is changing into information science. A few universities have incorporated this word in the course name but not removed the word library. So some universities provide degree i.e. Bachelor in library and Information Science (BLISC), and Masters in Library and information Science (MLISC), M.Phil in Library and Information science and Ph.D in Library and Information Science and some provide degrees like Bachelor in library Science (B.LIB), and Master in Library Science (M.LIB), M.Phil in Library and Information science and Ph.D in Library Science).
Remuneration:
In the age of information revolution librarianship is a well paid job. However salaries of librarian vary depending upon their individual qualifications, experience, size and nature of the hiring institutes. Librarian employed in government museum, archives, galleries have higher earnings than those in collages and universities. Librarians working in private documentation centres and research institutes also have handsome earnings.
The number of schools and colleges that are opening up in the country offer great opportunity to young professionals. The Government has also launched a number of Central Universities and state universities. There’s also a plan to create a knowledge grid, which will depend upon the services of library professionals. Add to this, subject libraries that are opening up, with the increase in specialised institutes for law, hotel management, engineering, medical etc. A librarian working for a law firm may hold both library science and law degrees, while medical librarians should have a strong background in the sciences.
A library professional is a specialist, and is treated at par with other experts. Thus, in an academic institution a head librarian is equivalent to a professor and falls into the same salary bracket. A deputy librarian is treated equivalent to associate professor.
