B.Tech Boom: Engineering Seats Surge in India, South Takes the Lead!
This marks an 18.84% increase in engineering seats after reaching a decade-low of 12.54 lakh in 2021-22. In 2014-15, there were 17.05 lakh seats, but numbers declined each year until a rebound began in 2022-23 with a 2% rise, followed by 5% in 2023-24, and a sharp 10% growth this year.

Southern Dominance:
Notably, three southern states - Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana - hold a staggering 40% share of the total B.Tech seats.
- Tamil Nadu leads with 3,08,686 seats (up 32,856 from last year).
- Andhra Pradesh follows with 1,83,532 seats (up 23,518).
- Telangana comes in third with 1,45,557 seats (up 20,213).
Factors Driving the Growth:
- Lifting of Intake Restrictions: In 2023-24, AICTE lifted restrictions on intake for new B.Tech programs aimed at working professionals. This policy change has led to approximately 50,000 new seats under the supernumerary quota.
- Focus on Working Professionals: Around 400-500 educational institutions have launched specialized engineering courses catering to working professionals.
Positive Impact on B.Tech Admissions:
- The rise in available seats aligns with a recent improvement in B.Tech admissions.
- Between 2014-15 and 2021-22, engineering college admissions declined, with many institutions facing closure due to low enrollment.
- However, the trend has reversed in recent years:
- Admissions rose to 71% of available seats in 2021-22.
- This figure further improved to 81% in 2022-23.

Evolving Seat Approval Process:
- AICTE now adopts a more flexible approach, approving the number of seats requested by institutions, provided they meet infrastructure and faculty requirements.
- This allows colleges to self-declare and increase their intake by up to 420 seats.
This substantial increase in B.Tech seats bodes well for the future of engineering education in India. With more opportunities for aspiring engineers and a focus on serving working professionals, the sector is poised for continued growth.
