Improving Spoken English of Students-Activity Based

Spoken English of the students of an institute can be improved by making them practice the Activities of – Conversation Just a Minute Speech (JAM), Reading Test(RT),News Reading and Group Discussion(GD)-each on a day for five days and undertaking Review on the sixth day- covering a week undertaking review on the sixth day – covering a week under the supervision of an English teacher. This practice every week will enrich the skills of LSRW- Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
On Day 1, a recorded Conversation (Audio) is to be played four or five times. It can be of 1 or 2 minutes length consisting of 2 or 3 characters. Students are to be instructed to listen to it carefully. The script of the conversation can be written on the board. Repeated listening of the students will train their ears and then their voice. Later , students-two or three -depending on the number of characters of the conversation- are to be instructed to enact the conversation team after team with the help of the text already noted down by them from the board. Pronunciation, dialogue delivery, voice modulations etc.,of each group are to be evaluated by the teacher for 100 marks and the score of each student is to be recorded. A topic is to be announced in advance for JAM for the next day. Let each student prepare the draft at home and practice it by editing it finally for a minute's Length.
On Day2, each student is to be instructed to present the speech. A caution bell can be given at the end of one minute. Content, language,style etc., are to be evaluated by the Teacher to assess the performance of each student for 100 marks and the score needs to be recorded.
On Day3, a recorded Reading Passage ( Audio) of 1 or 2 minutes to be played for 4 or 5 times to be listened to by the students. The text of the passage can be written on the board and the students can note it down. After the listening part is over, each student is to be instructed to present the Reading. The Reading Skill of each student is to be evaluated for 100 marks and the score is be recorded. Students are to be instructed to prepare 1 minute News Reading drafts at home to be presented the next day. Each student is to Pick out two headings from an English newspaper-the details of which may be prepared in own Sentences. The students must watch the T.V news reading to adopt style, mannerism and techniques of presenting news.
On Day4, each student is to be instructed to present the News Reading. Starting, continuing and ending of the news of each student are to be evaluated for 100 marks and the Stories to be recorded. A topic is to be announced in advance for Group Discussion for the next day. The students need to be classified into some groups. Each group Leader is to initiate and conclude the discussion while each member of that group is to speak for half a minute. The drafts under the supervision of the leader are to be prepared accordingly by the members.
On Day5, each group is to present the discussion and the collective performance of the group is to be evaluated for 100 marks and the score is to be recorded. Language,Discussion skills,etc., are to be judged.
On Day 6, all the performances given from Days 1 to 5 are to be reviewed and suitable remedial measures are to be suggested by the teacher. The same activities are to be repeated for a few weeks until the performance of the students is improved considerably.
