B.Ed and M.Ed Courses One-Year Duration Reintroduced: Check Key Changes

In a significant development, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has officially approved reducing the duration of B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) and M.Ed (Master of Education) courses to one year. This change comes after 11 years, reversing the 2014 decision that extended the B.Ed course to a two-year program.

The new regulation, part of the NCTE Regulation 2025, has also received approval from the Central Government. The updated duration for these courses is expected to come into effect from the 2026–27 academic year.
Key Highlights of the B.Ed and M.Ed Course Changes
- The B.Ed and M.Ed programs will now be completed in one year instead of two.
- This change aligns with international standards and aims to improve the efficiency of teacher training in India.
- Admissions for these revised courses will begin under the new guidelines from the upcoming academic year.
Eligibility Criteria for One-Year B.Ed and M.Ed Courses

For B.Ed Admissions:
- Candidates must have completed Post-Graduation (PG) from a recognized university.
- Those who have finished a 4-year integrated degree are also eligible for direct admission.

For Candidates with a 3-Year Degree:
- Students holding a standard 3-year undergraduate degree must complete a 2-year B.Ed course to qualify for teaching positions.
- They can then pursue the one-year M.Ed program after completing their B.Ed.

For Integrated Course Holders:
- Candidates with a 4-year Integrated B.Ed degree or a 2-year B.Ed degree can directly apply for the 1-year M.Ed course.
Implementation Timeline
- The revised courses will be implemented from the 2026–27 academic year.
- Admissions under the new duration will begin after the official notification from the NCTE and the Central Government.
