Model and Preparatory Questions for Reasoning in Bank Exams
Direction Test
Problems on direction test are framed to gauge the sense of direction of an aspirant. Following few points should be borne in mind while solving the questions on direction test.
H There are four major directions (North, South, East and West) and four cardinal directions
(North-East, South-East, North-West and South-West).
● Always use direction plane as reference in solving all the questions
● In a journey the left hand side of a person is his left turn and the right hand side of a
person will be his right turn.
● Further in a journey path mark the starting point and end point differently.
● In the morning the Sun rises in the East and the shadow of any object falls in the opposite
direction to the Sun i.e. in the West direction.
● In the evening the Sun sets in the West and hence the shadow of any objects falls in East.
Model Questions
1. Animesh who is standing at Point P, walks 12 metres towards East to reach Point Q. He then turns left and walks 4 metres to reach point R. Now he takes a right turn and walks 7 metres to reach Point S. From Point S, he turns right and walks 16 metres to reach point I. From Point I he walks 7 metres towards West and stops at point J. Point J is in which direction with respect to Point P?
1) South-East 2) North-East
3) South-West 4) North-West 5) South
Sol:
Now draw a direction diagram at P and then join P to J. The direction shown by the line PJ will be the answer.
The direction shown by PJ is South-East. Ans: 1
2. One evening before sunset two friends Ram and Raheem were talking to each other face to face. If Ram shadow was exactly to his right side, which direction was Raheem facing ?
1) North 2) South
3) West 4) Data inadequate
5) None of these
Sol: In the evening the sun sets in the West and the shadow of any object falls in East.
Here Ram's shadow was exactly to his (Ram's) right side.
➡︎ Ram was exactly to the left of his (Ram's) shadow.
➡︎ Ram was to the left of east
[shadow falls in East].
● Ram was facing North.
● Raheem was facing opposite to the direction of Ram. Hence Raheem would be facing the South direction.
Ans: 2
3. Malavika's back is facing 'North East'. If she turns 45° in anti clock wise direction and later 180°, which side is she facing now?
1) North 2) South-West 3) West 4) North-East 5) None of these
Sol:If Malavika's back is facing North-East then Malavika will be facing South-West (i.e. opp to North-East) If she turns 45° anticlockwise direction then she will be facing South direction. Later when she turns 180° she will be facing direction opposite to South i.e. North direction. Ans: 1
4. A man facing South turns to his left and walk 10 metre, then he turns to his right and walk 15 metre¸ again he turns to his left and walk 5 metre and then he turns to his left and walk 15 metre. In which direction he is facing now?
1) West 2) North
3) South 4) East
5) None of these
Sol: Man is initially facing South and turns left, right, left and left successively. As taking one right turn nullifies the effect of taking one left turn, it can be concluded that the man is effectively taking two left turns only. If a person takes two left turns he would be facing a direction opposite to initial direction. The direction opposite to South is North. So the man is facing North direction. Ans: 2
Directions (Q.No.6-8): Study the following information carefully and answer the questions given
below:
Point B is 10 metre to the North of Point C. Point J is 7 metre to the East of point B. Point K is 5 metre to the West of point C. Point S is 12 metre to the South of point K. Point T is 5 metre to the East of point S.
Sol: Point B is 10 m to the North of Point C
Point J is 7 metre to the East of point B
Point K is 5 metre to the West of point C
Point S is 12 metre to the South
of point K
6. If Suman walks 7 metre to the East of T, takes a left turn and walks for 10 metre to reach Point X, how far and in which direction should Suman walk to reach point J?
1) 10 metre East
2) 12 metre North
3) 8 metre North
4) 10 metre South
5) 12 metre South
Sol: If Suman walks 7 metres to East of T and takes a left turn then J will be at a distance of 12+10= 22m to the North of the point where Suman takes a turn. If he walks 10 metres to reach X then he should walk a further distance of 12 m in North direction to reach J. Ans: 2
7. In what direction is Point S with respect to Point C?
1) South-East 2) North-West
3) South-West 4) West 5) North
Sol: Draw a direction diagram at point C and then join 'C' and 'S'. The direction shown by CS will be the answer.
The direction shown by CS is South-West. Ans: 3
8. How far is point T from point B?
1) 12 metre 2) 26 metre 3) 22 metre 4) 15 metre 5) 18 metre
Sol: BC = 10 CT = 12
\ BT = BC + CT = 10 + 12
= 22 M Ans: 3
Directions(Q.No.9-11):Study the following information carefully and answer the questions given below:
Raman walks 14m towards south from point P and reaches point Q. Then he takes a left turn and walks 18m to reach point R and he turns left
and walks 19m to reach point S. Again, he turns left and walks 10m to reach point T. Finally he turns left and walks 5m to reach point V.
Sol:
9. How far and in which direction is point V from point P ?
1) 10m to the East
2) 12m to the East
3) 8m to the East
4) 8m to the West
5) None of these
\V is at a distance of 8 m to the East of P.
Ans: 3
10. Point Q is in which direction with respect to point S ?
1) South -East 2) South- West
3) North-East 4) South
5) None of these
\ Drawing a direction diagram at Q and on joining with S, the line QS shows South-west direction.
Ans:2
11. What is the total distance that Raman walks?
1) 66m 2) 60m
3) 70m 4) Can't be determined
5) None of these
\Total distance walked by Raman = 14 + 18 + 19 + 10 + 5 = 66 m
Ans: 1
