REPORTED SPEECH (part 2)

Questions Reported Speech report ని ఎలా లో వాడాలో తెలుసుకున్నాం. ఈ వారం మనం సాధారణ వాక్యాలను ఎలా చెయ్యాలో తెలుసుకుందాం.
మామూలు వాక్యాల్ని Reported Speech లో చెప్పేటప్పుడు "that' అనే link పదాన్ని ఉపయోగించాలి.
Reported Speech begins with a verb in Simple Present or Simple Past.
E.g. He says that, He said that,.. We use Present Tense when we report a conversation that is still going on, or while reading a letter, or while reading some instructions from a manual etc., or while talking about someone's oft repeated sentence.
Please remember, you say something, you tell somebody. Do not confuse 'say' with 'tell'. Or at least say, He said to me. [said తర్వాత "to whom'] ఎవరికి అనే మొదలవుతుంది
E.g.
• Ratna said, "I will change this car.''
Ratna said that she would change that car.
• The boys said, "We're playing a match next week.''
The boys said that they were playing a match the following week.
Sometimes, the tense remains unchanged in Reported Speech.
Universal truths, scientific statements, proverbs when made in Simple Present do not change to Simple Past.
• The teacher explained, "Eclipses are caused by the shadow of the planets.''
The teacher explained that eclipses are caused by the shadow of the planets.
Statements made in Simple Past are normally changed to Past Perfect. However, spoken forms made in Simple Past remain unchanged.
• He said, "My wife arrived on Monday.''
He said that his wife arrived on Monday.
• He said, "I decided not to buy that car since it is too old.''
He said that he decided not to buy that car since it is too old.
Emotions are also reported in Reported Speech.
• He said, "What a tall building!''
He exclaimed that it was a tall building.
Similarly, we could use verbs such as: murmur, shout, whisper, question
Transform the following sentences from Direct Speech to Reported Speech and vice versa.

- The new commissioner of police said to his officers, "Treat the citizens well. We must bring peace and harmony in our city.''
- The manager asked his secretary to open all his letters and show him if there is anything important.
- The teenager explained that he did not have a job and he would not mind hard work to earn money.
- The invigilator told the students to stop writing as the time was up.
- "Get out of my sight. I am disgusted with your mistakes,'' shouted the Project Manager.
- "Sir,'' pleaded the programmer, "Give me another chance. I will try my best to come up to your expectations and finish the project in time.''
- The police asked the man who lives next door.
- The manager asked his assistant Raju to get his coat.
- Priya requested Rao whether she could have his torchlight once again.
- He cautioned me to be careful and not hurt myself.
- The staff enquired with their principal who would preside over the annual function.
- The new commissioner of police advised his officers to treat the citizens well and they must bring peace and harmony in their city.
- The manager said to his secretary, "Open all my letters and show me if there is anything important.''
- The teenager said, "I don't have a job and I will not mind hard work to earn money.''
- The invigilator said to the students, "Stop writing as the time is up!''
- The Project Manager angrily shouted at the programmer to get out his sight as he was disgusted with his mistakes.
- The programmer pleaded to give him another chance and assured that he would try his best to come up to his expectations and finish the project in time.

3. "I don't speak Tamil," Radha said.
4. "Say hello to Jim," they said their dog Oreo.
5. "The movie began at seven o'clock," the usher said.

8. "I never make mistakes," he said.
9. "Does Jyoti know Abhinav?" he wanted to know.
10. "Don't try this feat at home," the stuntman told the audience.
