Australia has two student intakes each year, in the months of February and March and then in July and August. Some institutions have started having intakes in September and October to meet the needs of international students. One should start applying for admission ideally 4-5 months before the course commencement.
Candidates can get application forms in any one of the following ways:
For Undergraduate courses students will be required to submit their academic transcripts, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and a proof of their proficiency in English Language. The TOEFL or IELTS score is a testimony of a student’s proficiency in the language.
The statement of purpose should include a student’s reasons for choosing a particular course and institute and his present and future goals.
For post graduate courses students will be required to submit their academic transcripts, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and a proof of their proficiency in English Language, as in a TOEFL / IELTS tests. In addition, certain postgraduate courses like MBA may require GMAT score of the applicant. Work experience of the applicant is also a pre-requisite for certain courses like the MBA or other vocational courses. Students applying for a post graduate research program are required to submit their detailed research proposal.
Standardized tests for admission:
IELTS: For most courses and universities, International students are required to take IELTS (International English Language Test) which is regularly administered by the British Council. Some universities may accept TOEFL as an alternative.
TOEFL: This test is conducted by ETS for International students applying to a University abroad.
This is accepted by most Australian universities
Letter from Institution: Some Universities may waive IELTS/TOEFL if you can get a letter from institution that you have last studied in mentioning that you have been studying in English medium throughout and they are convinced that you are proficient in English.
Other Tests GMAT: For most management courses, International students are required to take GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).

Postgraduate – As well as the satisfactory completion of at least one degree at undergraduate level, your institution may take research ability or relevant work experience into consideration.
Vocational education and training – Generally there are no other entrance exams for VET institutions. However some courses may have specific pre-requisite subjects or work experience requirements.
Schools – Entry requirements can vary between schools in Australia, depending on the state or territory you will be studying in. Academic performance and ability is considered during the selection process.
Tuition fees
As an international student, you must pay your tuition fees up-front.
Aside from tuition fees, some institutions may also charge for other student costs, such as library, laboratory or sports facility costs. Excursions, books and stationery are other costs to consider, and your course may also require specific essential materials, such as lab coats or photographic supplies.
Your institution will provide you with information on how and when to pay your tuition fees.
Student Visa Procedure for Australia
On successful application, students are issued an Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE). A student must have an eCoE to apply for his student visa.

- Via email: One can request application forms from the universities website. Most universities have a form on their website, which can be completed and submitted online to request application material.
- Downloading from the university website: Many universities provide Download Application Forms option on their respective websites. Print outs of the forms can be taken and used as regular application forms.
- Getting applications from University Representatives: One can also get the application forms from many authorized representatives of Australian Universities across the country.
- You can also get in touch with the Australian Embassy and ask them to send you information about the university you wish to pursue education from.

Student Visa Procedure for Australia
On successful application, students are issued an Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE). A student must have an eCoE to apply for his student visa.
- Obtain an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment Certificate (eCoC) to prove you have been accepted onto a course in Australia from your educational institution. If you are being sponsored by AusAID or Defence, get a letter from them confirming their support of your studies in Australia. Secondary school exchange students need a completed Acceptance Advice of Secondary Exchange Student (AASES) form.
- Download and fill in your student visa application no more than four months before your course starts in Australia (see Resources). You must have an Assessment Level 1 to apply online, which is automatically given to American and Canadian passport holders. Send all the documents asked for with your application. Declare any family members or partners who you want to take to Australia. If you are applying by mail, you can apply as soon as you have been confirmed in a course of study.
- Check which Australian Government office your online visa application is being sent to and contact them to ask which currencies and methods of payment they accept for your visa fees. As of April 2010, the cost of a student visa ranged from 0 to AU$540. At the same time, ask whether you need Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
- Buy your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and send a receipt to the office processing your student visa application, if required. Generally, you will need to do this before your student visa is released.
- Contact the Australian Government office if you have not received a decision within three weeks. You can check an online application at any time using your Transaction Reference Number (TRN), issued upon application.
