Software glitch causing delay in online visa: says US official

The US online visa application process took time to complete because of software related issues and officials were working on sorting it out, a senior diplomat in the US Consulate General in Chennai said.

Yes. We are aware of the software problems, Nicholas J Manring, Chief of Consular Services, told a guidance session on 'US-Business visa organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce at Coimbatore.

He was responding to submissions by students that it took time for completing the online application process. He, however, said it would not be possible to set a specific time frame to resolve the issue. Government process takes time, Nicholas said.

If there are any errors (in visa applications) dont worry. But just let know the officers about the errors when you go for the interviews, he said.

Stating that the entire work of processing immigrant visa applications had been moved to Mumbai as the non-immigrant visa workload grew in Chennai, he said the Consulate increased the staff strength in the past five years to reduce waiting time which has come down to 2-7 days from 1-2 months.

Chennai has emerged as the 10th largest post in terms of visa demand, he said adding non-immigrant visa demand grew 21 per cent and the Consulate received 1.75 lakh applications last year.

He said blanket L visas issued to managers, executives and specialised knowledge professionals transferring within the company and moving to the USA were being exclusively processed in Chennai. This was being done as the US wanted consistency in decisions on visa applications, he pointed out.
