Electrical & Electronics Engineering

The discoveries of Michael Faraday formed the foundation of electric motor technology.
Electricity has been a subject of scientific interest since at least the early 17th century. The first electrical engineer was probably William Gilbert. He was also the first to draw a clear distinction between magnetism and static electricity and is credited with establishing the term electricity. In 1800, Volta developed the voltaic pile, a forerunner of the electric battery. Nikola Tesla developed transformers and induction motors for use in AC. In 1882, Thomas Edison switched on the world's first large-scale electric power network that provided 110 volts DC in New York City.

There are many advantages of using electrical energy. Transmission efficiency is high and can be transported to anywhere. It is clean and eco-friendly. Easy and quick conversion of energy and time taken to transport is fraction of a second. Amplification and attenuation is possible. Hence, all the other forms of energies are converted into electrical energy.

The per capita consumption of electrical power in the country in 2005-06 as calculated by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) was about 631 Kilowatt Hours. The National Electricity Policy envisages that the per capita availability of electricity will be increased to over 1000 units by 2012. In India, power transmission and distribution losses are about 33%, second highest in the world. If losses are reduced by 16 %, we can save 26000 MW (on 60,000 MW installed capacity. The economic growth and standard of living in any country depends mainly upon the per capita consumption of electrical power. Name any appliance in home to very big industries use, electrical energy and the drives are electronic control.

Entire world will be stalled if power failure occurs. As long as there is a demand for power, there is a demand for Electrical Engineers. Electrical power demand is increasing at a faster rate doubling for every 10 years or less. It will continue to increase for 100 more years. So EEE students will have very bright feature. The training that Electrical & Electronics Engineering students undergo during their course will enhance their analytical ability and their minds will be sharpened.

Sub disciplines
Power engineering
deals with the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity as well as the design of a range of related devices. These include transformers, electric generators, electric motors, high voltage engineering, and power electronics.

Control engineering focuses on the modeling of a diverse range of dynamic systems and the design of controllers that will cause these systems to behave in the desired manner. To implement such controllers, electrical engineers may use electrical circuits, digital signal processors, microcontrollers and PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers). Control engineering has a wide range of applications from the flight and propulsion systems of commercial airliners to the cruise control present in many modern automobiles. It also plays an important role in industrial automation.

Electronic engineering involves the design and testing of electronic circuits that use the properties of components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes and transistors to achieve a particular functionality.

Instrumentation engineering deals with the design of devices to measure physical quantities such as pressure, flow and temperature. The design of such instrumentation requires a good understanding of physics that often extends beyond electromagnetic theory.

Core subjects
Power systems, electrical machines and design, electric circuit analysis and synthesis, power electronics, electromagnetic fields, computer aided power system analysis, utilization of electric power, electrical engineering materials, instrumentation and control systems.

Higher education
The scope for aspirants after completing B. Tech in Electrical Engineering is very vast both in terms of higher studies and for immediate jobs. Candidates who have an interest in higher studies and have good core subject knowledge can take up Master of Technology courses in Electrical Engineering.

Possible disciplines at Masters Level: Power Systems, System and Control, Electrical Machines and Industrial Drives, Power Electronics and Drives, Non-Conventional Energy systems, Distribution Systems, Computer Aided power Systems, Power Systems and Power Electronics etc. They can take up career in Power Engineering Industries, Power Companies, Consulting Organizations, Academic institutions and R&D organizations.

Job prospects
Being one of the core subjects of engineering, the job prospects after B.Tech (EEE) are available in almost all sectors. As the modern life is completely dependent on electrical objects, electrical engineers have a great demand in almost all fields. Having a post graduate degree will increase the prospects. They work in design, develop, test and supervise the deployment of electrical systems and electronic devices. For example, the operation of electric power stations, the lighting and wiring of buildings, the design of household appliances or the electrical control of industrial machinery. Electrical engineers are needed in almost all the industries which consume electrical energy. EEE students have opportunities not only in India but also abroad.
