M.S. Swaminathan, Father of the Green Revolution in India Passed Away
M.S Swaminathan (98) breathed his last at his home in Chennai. M.S Swaminathan was born on 27th August 1925 at Kumbakonam in the then Madras Presidency. He has created superior varieties in rice.
Early Life and Education:
Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan was born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. He studied agriculture at the Agricultural College and Research Institute in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and later earned a Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Cambridge, UK.
Green Revolution:
Swaminathan is often referred to as the "Father of the Green Revolution in India." He played a crucial role in introducing and promoting high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice, along with modern farming techniques, which significantly increased agricultural productivity and helped alleviate food shortages in India during the 1960s and 1970s.
