PM Modi Announces One Million Dollar Grant To UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
  • India is hosting the World Heritage Committee Meeting for the first time which will continue till 31st of July.
  • Prime Minister Modi announced that India will contribute one million dollar to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. This grant will be used for capacity building, technical assistance and conservation of the world heritage sites.
  • The grant will especially be used for the countries of the Global South.
  • The World Heritage Committee meets once a year and is responsible for managing all matters pertaining to World Heritage and deciding on sites to be inscribed on the World Heritage list. During this meeting, proposals for nominating new sites on the World Heritage list, State of Conservation reports of 124 existing World Heritage properties, International Assistance and Utilisation of World Heritage Funds among others will be discussed. Over two thousand international and national delegates from more than 150 countries will attend the meeting.


Centre Lifts Ban On Government Employees Taking Part In RSS Activities.

 

  • The Centre has lifted a ban on government employees taking part in Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activities. The ban imposed in November 1966 during the rule of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has been removed by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions.
  • BJP IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya said the unconstitutional order issued 58 years ago, in 1966, imposing a ban on government employees taking part in RSS activities has been withdrawn by the Modi government. Several state governments, including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, have already removed the restrictions on government employees being linked to the RSS.

US President Joe Biden Withdraws From Presidential Race.

 

  • US President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the presidential race for the upcoming November election.
  • Biden expressed that serving as President has been the greatest honour of his life. He emphasized that in the best interest of the Democratic Party and the nation, it is paramount to focus solely on fulfilling his duties as President for the remainder of his term.
  • Additionally, President Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the presidential nominee and thanked her for being an extraordinary partner. Since the debate with former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump on June 28, the pressure was mounting on President Biden to withdraw his candidature from the race. He is currently isolating in his home in Delaware after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

 

ECONOMY

GDP Growth Projected At 6.5-7 % In Economic Survey.

 

  • Economic Survey 2023-24 has projected a real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 6.5 to 7 per cent in Financial Year 2024-25.
  • According to the survey, domestic growth drivers have supported economic growth in the financial year 2023-24 despite uncertain global economic performance.
  • The survey states that merchandise and services exports are likely to increase. It further mentions that a normal rainfall forecast by the India Meteorological Department and the satisfactory spread of the southwest monsoon are likely to improve agriculture sector performance and support the revival of rural demand.
  • It also said, that structural reforms such as the Goods and Service Tax (GST) and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) have also matured and are delivering envisaged results.


RBI Expects Inflation To Be 4.5 % In Current Financial Year.

  • On the inflation front, the Reserve Bank of India expects headline inflation to be 4.5 per cent in the Financial Year 2025 and 4.1 per cent in the Financial Year 2026. The International Monetary Fund has projected an inflation rate of 4.6 per cent in 2024 and 4.2 per cent in 2025 for India.
  • The Survey mentions that the real GDP in the Financial Year 2024 was 20 per cent higher than its level in the Financial Year 2020, a feat that only a very few major economies achieved, with a strong possibility for robust growth in this financial year.
  • Growth has been inclusive with a reduction in unemployment and multi-dimensional poverty and an increase in labour force participation.
  • The survey states that the country’s real GDP grew by 8.2 per cent in the financial year 2024, posting growth of over 7 per cent for a third consecutive year, driven by stable consumption demand and steadily improving investment demand. Net taxes at constant (2011-12) prices grew by 19.1 per cent in the financial year 2024.

Indian Tennis Legends Leander Paes and Vijay Amritraj Inducted into International Tennis Hall of Fame.

 

  • In a momentous occasion for Indian and Asian tennis, former Indian tennis stars Leander Paes and Vijay Amritraj have become the first Asian men to be inducted into the prestigious International Tennis Hall of Fame. This historic induction not only celebrates their individual achievements but also marks a significant milestone for tennis in the Asian continent.
  • The induction ceremony took place in Newport, United States of America, the home of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The event was a gathering of tennis royalty, featuring several Hall of Famers and Grand Slam champions:

Manolo Marquez Appointed Head Coach Of Indian Men’s Football Team.

  • Manolo Marquez was appointed as the new head coach of the Indian men’s football team by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on July 20. Marquez will take over as the full-time national team head coach after ISL 2024-25.
  • Marquez has been coaching in India since 2020 and has been on the touchline for Hyderabad FC and the Gaurs for more than 100 matches. The Spanish coach managed Hyderabad for three seasons and won the ISL title with them in 2022 before switching to FC Goa ahead of the 2023-24 season. He has also coached in Thailand and Croatia during his 22-year coaching career.
