India has 3,167 tigers, reveals latest tiger census released by PM

  • India’s tiger population rose by 200 in the past four years to reach 3,167 in 2022, the latest tiger census data released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • According to the data, the tiger population was 1,411 in 2006, 1,706 in 2010, 2,226 in 2014, 2,967 in 2018 and 3,167 in 2022.
  • At the inaugural session of the commemoration of 50 years of ‘Project Tiger’, the Prime Minister also launched the ‘International Big Cat Alliance’ (IBCA) and released a booklet ‘Amrit Kaal Ka Tiger Vision’, presenting the vision for tiger conservation in the next 25 years.
  • India launched ‘Project Tiger’ on April 1, 1973 to promote tiger conservation. Initially, it covered nine tiger reserves spread over 18,278 sq km. At present, there are 53 tiger reserves spanning more than 75,000 sq km (approximately 2.4 per cent of the country’s geographical area).

Ukriane's first Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Emine Dzhaparova to begin 4-day visit to India

  • The first Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ms. Emine Dzhaparova will be on a four-day visit to India today. During the visit, Ms. Dzhaparova will hold talks with Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs. Both sides are expected to discuss bilateral relations.
  • They will also exchange views on the current situation in Ukraine and global issues of mutual interest. Ms. Dzhaparova will also call on Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi and meet Deputy National Security Adviser Vikram Misri.
  • India shares warm and friendly relations and multifaceted cooperation with Ukraine. Over the last 30 years of establishing diplomatic relations, bilateral cooperation between the two countries has made significant progress in the areas of trade, education, culture and defence.

Bangladesh to play vital role in Japan's vision for Free and Open Indo-Pacific- Japanese Ambassador IWAMA Kiminori

  • Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh IWAMA Kiminori has expressed the hope that Bangladesh will play a vital role in materialising the new vision of Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) as enumerated by Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio in March during his visit to India.
  • The port visit was a practical cooperation between Japan and Bangladesh to realise the FOIP for ensuring a rule-based international order to bring stability and prosperity for every country as well as to secure peace and prosperity in the region.
  • Principles for peace and rules for prosperity, addressing the challenges in an Indo-Pacific way, multi-layered connectivity and ensuring secure and safe use of sea to the air were the four pillars of the new vision.
  • Japan focuses on development of an Industrial Value Chain connecting the Bay of Bengal and North Eastern Region of India. It is a concrete example of the 3rd pillar of ‘Multi-layered Connectivity’ as outlined by Prime Minister KISHIDA.
  • The importance of further strengthening connectivity in the Bay of Bengal region including Chattogram. This port visit is also one of the 4th pillars of practical cooperation for realising FOIP.

Israeli military carries out air strikes on targets belonging to Palestinian militant group Hamas in southern Lebanon, Gaza Strip

  • Israel has carried out air strikes on targets belonging to the Palestinian militant group Hamas in southern Lebanon and Gaza Strip. Israeli military said the attacks were a response to a dozens of rockets fired from Lebanon into northern part of the country.
  • The barrage of rockets in Lebanon was the largest since a 2006 war between the two countries. Militants in Gaza fired dozens more rockets after the strikes began.
  • According to Israeli officials, two Israeli sisters were killed in a shooting attack near a settlement in the occupied West Bank hours after the Israeli strikes.
  • Tensions are high in the region following two nights of Israeli police raids at the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem earlier this week.
