The sugar industry in the country is one of the largest ongoing industries in the private sector.
Sugar preparation involves a special process. It involves many processes. Professionals working on key techniques in sugar production are required to be trained in 'sugar technology' such as fermentation and processing. There is a lack of proper awareness among students about jobs in this field. But there is a huge demand for the sugar technology candidates in the job market.

Sugar Technology Courses
Many institutes in the country offer sugar technology courses to train the professionals required for the sugar industry. They are:

Eligibility:
If you want to do Engineering, Bachelor's degree in Sugar Technology, you can apply after Intermediate (MPC). After that you can join courses like Post Graduation, PG Diploma and even can do Research.

National Sugar Institute (NSI)- Kanpur, Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) – Pune, are leading Sugar Technology institutes. The courses offered by these have a good reputation in the country. In addition, many colleges also offer degree and diploma level courses.

NSI - Kanpur
National Sugar Institute: It was the Indian Sugar Committee appointed by the Government of India in 1920 that first recommended the establishment of an all India institute for research in sugar technology. The need for a central sugar research institute was also emphasized by the Royal Commission in Agriculture in 1928 and the Tariff Board in 1930.

The Institute awards Certificate, Masters and Doctoral degrees in various branches of technology and science. It has been making special efforts to recruit talented faculty on a world-wide basis and to admit bright students from all over the country by online selection process.

NSI currently offers several courses. Courses in Sugar Chemistry, Sugar Technology, Sugar Engineering and Technical are available.

NSI courses include Fellowship of National Sugar Institute, Postgraduate Diploma Course in Associateship of National Sugar Institute of Sugar Technology, Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Course. Offering Post Graduate Diploma Course in Industrial fermentation and Alcohol Technology, Post Graduate Diploma Course in Sugar Productivity and Maturity Management, Post Graduate Diploma Course in Industrial Instrumentation and Process Automation, Post Graduate Diploma in Quality Control, Environmental Science, Sugar Engineering Certificate Course, Sugar Boiling Certificate Course, Quality Control Certificate Courses. The National Sugar Institute has issued notification for admissions for the 2020–21 academic year in various courses offered by Kanpur. Seats for the respective courses will be filled on the basis of the rank obtained in the entrance test. Those interested can apply online by June 4, 2021.

Vasanthdada Sugar Institute
Another notable sugar institute in India is Vasantdada Sugar Institute in Pune. It is affiliated to Savitribai Poole Pune University. The institute offers PG Diploma, M.Sc., Certification Programs in various specializations based on the entrance examination.

Devanga Arts College, affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University,Tamil Nadu, is offering a full-time Diploma in Sugar Technology course for one year.

SV Polytechnic College (Tirupati) in Andhra Pradesh is offering Diploma in Sugar Technology as a three-year full-time course after Class X.

A three-year Diploma in Chemical and Sugar Technology course is available at Government Polytechnic College, Nizamabad.

Job opportunities
Candidates who have completed Sugar Technology courses can serve as Sugar Engineers, Consultants, Researchers, Supervisors, Quality Analysts. They get jobs in sugar factories, non-alcoholic, alcoholic beverage manufacturing companies, sugar research labs and food processing units.

Candidates can get jobs in public and private sugar factories such as Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCCSF).

Companies like CIAL Group, DSCL Group, Rana Sugars and Birla Group offer a wide range of opportunities for students in sugar technology and related courses. International companies such as SAB Millers, McDowell, India-Glycols, Pernod-Record Distillery offer opportunities for those who have completed alcohol technology courses from the National Sugar Institute. Many institutes employ PhD students in these courses as researchers and faculty.

Salaries
Those who complete the Sugar Technology courses will be paid according to the company. For those who have done diploma after tenth class, the starting salary is up to Rs. 25,000 per month. Those with one year of experience are getting an annual salary up to Rs. 6 lakh. The wages are even higher at distilleries. Those who have completed courses from top institutes like NSI-Kanpur and those who have studied at VSI-Pune are likely to get an annual salary of Rs. 6 lakh to Rs. 15 lakh with skills and experience.
