Dentist
Those who have completed the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course are referred to as dentists. They treat dental ailments. A dentist, also known as a dental surgeon, is a surgeon who specializes in dentistry, the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and conditions of the oral cavity. A licensed dentist can carry out most dental treatments such as restorative (dental restorations, crowns, bridges), orthodontics (braces), prosthodontic (dentures, crown/bridge), endodontic (root canal) therapy, periodontal (gum) therapy, and oral surgery (extraction of teeth), as well as performing examinations, taking radiographs (x-rays) and diagnosis.

Admission & Curriculum
B.D.S. is an undergraduate course for five years duration, of which four years will be for theory, while one year will be for rotatory internship. The curriculum of BDS is being regulated by Dental Council of India. In order to get into BDS course, it is mandatory for students to appear and qualify in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), for admission.

The BDS course contains the basic subjects like human anatomy, physiology & biochemistry, dental material, prosthodontics, microbiology, embryology & histology, general & dental pharmacology and pathology, periodontics, pedodontics, orthodontics and dentistry.

A BDS graduate may go for the PG degree programmes leading to the Domain MDS (Master of Dental Surgery). MDS is the advanced degree in dentistry field and allows the candidates to specialize in any of its discipline. Interested candidates can also go for research programme by pursuing Doctor of Philosophy.
