The University of Cambridge launched a new pre-degree foundation course with lower entry requirements to increase diversity. The varsity announced that the Cambridge Foundation Year is free of cost, fully funded, and targeted at a completely fresh stream of applicants. The one-year, full-time residential programme follows a ‘rigorous’ application procedure, with the first intake of 52 students set to commence in October 2022 for the start of the new academic year.
PRE-DEGREE PROGRAMME IN CAMBRIDGE FOR THE FIRST TIME

  • Cambridge Foundation Year Course Director Alex Pryce said, ‘This is a big day for those who are receiving their Cambridge Foundation Year offer, and a big day for the University.’
  • Noting that this is the first pre-degree course by Cambridge, he said, “This is the first time in its history that Cambridge has run a pre-degree foundation year programme, aimed at talented applicants who might not otherwise consider applying to study here, and the number of applications we received shows that it is competitive and that there is a clear appetite for it.”

Eligibility:

  • The University of Cambridge said that there is a rigorous admissions process including interviews and assessments designed to aid in selecting students who will thrive on the Foundation Year and be able to progress to a degree at Cambridge, as is the case with all its courses.
  • Students must also demonstrate their eligibility for the "generous scholarship" offered to all course participants.
  • Students with disturbed educational backgrounds in the UK, as well as refugees and asylum seekers, are all eligible for the programme.
  • Cambridge Foundation Year students will be awarded the CertHE qualification from the varsity upon completion, in addition to the chance to proceed to degrees in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Cambridge without the need to apply to the university again in the usual admissions round with suitable attainment.
