The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) helps businesses build a more effective workforce give job seekers and employees a competitive edge and enable universities to better prepare students for the international workplace.
Today TOEIC test scores are used by over 10,000 companies, government agencies and English Language Learning programs in 120 countries, and more than 6 million TOEIC tests were administered in 2011.
The TOEIC test offers companies in evaluating and classifying the English level of staff, therefore arranging positions accordingly. Secondly, a TOEIC score is one of the standards when recruiting new staff and it measures how much time staff is spending on developing themselves.
When you take the TOEIC Listening and Reading tests together with the TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests, your scores provide employers, organizations, colleges and universities with proof that you are proficient in all four language skills.
About the TOEIC Listening and Reading Test
The TOEIC Listening and Reading test is a valid assessment of English-language reading and listening skills for the workplace. Employers worldwide use the TOEIC test to determine who can communicate effectively in English across borders and cultures with coworkers and clients.
The TOEIC Listening and Reading test measures the ability to listen and read in English.
Test Content
The TOEIC Listening and Reading test is a paper-and-pencil, multiple-choice assessment. There are two timed sections of 100 questions each.
Section I: Listening
Test takers listen to a variety of questions and short conversations recorded in English, then answer questions based on what they have heard (100 items total).
Part 1: Photographs
Part 2: Question-Response
Part 3: Conversations
Part 4: Short Talks
Section II: Reading
Test takers read a variety of materials and respond at their own pace (100 items total).
Part 5: Incomplete Sentences
Part 6: Error Recognition or Text Completion
Part 7: Reading Comprehension
Test Length
The test takes approximately 2½ hours, with:
45 minutes for Section I
75 minutes for Section II
Approximately 30 minutes to answer biographical questions

Register for the Test
There are two types of TOEIC Listening and Reading test sessions:
Public test sessions are held in various testing locations around the world throughout the year. Institutional test sessions are offered by your employer or a language school.
How you register for the test varies depending on where you plan to test and whether you will attend a public or institutional test session.
To Register for Public Test Sessions outside the United States
Contact your local ETS Preferred Network office for test dates and availability in your area.
To register online:
Go to the online registration page, complete the registration steps and submit payment via Visa, MasterCard, American Express or JCB. The card must be registered in your name.
Scores Overview
Test Scores
Scores on the TOEIC Listening and Reading test are determined by the number of correct answers, which is converted to a scaled score.
The score report provides Listening, Reading and total scaled scores. The total scaled score is derived from adding the two-scaled scores together. The TOEIC Reading and Listening gives a score between 10 and 990.
Score Use
Scores are used to measure how well you might do in real-life situations where you are required to listen and read in English.
Score Validity
English-language skills may improve or decline over time, a score report will not be re-issued if two years have passed since taking the test.

About the TOEIC Speaking and Writing Tests
The TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests are valid assessments of English-language speaking and writing skills for the workplace.
Speaking Test Scores
• Questions 1–9 are rated on a scale of 0–3.
• Questions 10–11 are rated on a scale of 0–5.
• The sum of the ratings is converted to a scaled score of 0–200.
• Eight proficiency levels are provided.
Writing Test Scores
• Questions 1–5 are rated on a scale of 0–3.
• Questions 6–7 are rated on a scale of 0–4.
• Question 8 is rated on a scale of 0–5.
• The sum of the ratings is converted to a scaled score of 0–200.
• Nine proficiency levels are provided.
