Mock Tests crucial in Craking CAT exam: Raviteja (CAT 2012 All India Topper)
Sakshi Education
Geting 100 percentile in the prestigious and the toughest exam is an extraordinary achievement and our Palla Raviteja from Vishakapatnam is one among the 10 candidates all over India who made it possible. In an exclusive interview with Sakshi, Raviteja shares his success journey and preparation plan…
I am extremely happy getting 100 percentile which is more than what I aimed. Initially I planned my preparation targeting 99.9 percentile. After attending the test, I was confident of getting the expected score but was surprised on getting 100 in the exam. This was my second attempt. For 450 I secured 367 marks(185 from part 1 and 182 from part 2).
Background:
My father Rajendra Kumar is at present working as a CI at Narasipatnam,Visakhapatnam Dist and mother is a home maker. I did my schooling in Visakhapatnam and got 543 marks in the 10th standard. As I secured 17th rank in IIT-JEE entrance, took Electrical Engineering in IIT Madras. Presently I am working as an Assistant Manager in Pune, Tata Motors. My brother is pursuing Chemical Engineering in IIT Kharagpur.
MBA as a career option:
I was very much interested in knowing how industries run and corporate affairs would be and had special interest on operations research aspect. I spend time in knowing the how products are produced and released in the market. This is why I have taken Managerial Operations as my project work in B.Tech.
Through managerial skills with B.Tech background, there are many chances of becoming a good entrepreneur. Considering all these factors, I decided upon taking MBA as a career option.
Preparation Plan:
I did not follow specific books for preparation. I did attend coaching for three months in the 2011 summer holidays and frequently practiced mock tests. It took 12 hours a week in the preparation and in the weekends I used to sit 6 hours for mock tests and took another 6 hours for analysing the marks obtained in the mock test. My preparation included practicing at least 40 mock tests before writing the CAT exam. As I got less score in the verbal ability in the first attempt, concentrated more on it.
At least one year:
Most of the students studying B.Tech or other course think those three months of preparation after completing the course is sufficient to crack the CAT exam. In my view, this is a false perception as it takes at least one year to succeed in the exam. A three months of initial preparation is necessary and attending mock tests is essential to get stock of our preparation level. While getting the required percentile, clearing group discussion and the interview is also a crucial aspect in getting admission. In the group discussion, mostly topics on economic affairs are given, so an in depth study is required and it may take one year time.
There are no specific books for CAT preparation. The questions asked in the exam are of 10th class standard, so having thorough knowledge on basics taking support of the online material is sufficient.
Coaching is not required specially and practicing as many mock tests as possible is the most important aspect of the preparation and thereby getting high percentile.
