Parts of speech

Words are classified into different kinds or classes called parts of speech based on their usage. The parts of speech are eight in number.

They are –
Noun:A noun is a word used as the name of a person, place, animal or thing. It has to be started with a capital letter.

Eg:

• Ram is my friend.
• Bangalore is a well planned city.
• A dog is a loyal animal.
• Computer is an electronic device.
• Ramu came to my house yesterday.
• Beauty is skin deep.
• People are buying platinum instead of gold.
• A pack of dogs chased the boy.

Pronoun: A pronoun is a word used instead of a noun.
Eg:

1. He invited her.
2. We went to market last week.
3. It fell from the sky.
4. She invited only me.
5. I don’t mean to hurt him in anyway.

Adjective: An adjective is a word which describes a noun or a pronoun.
Eg:

1. She is a beautiful girl.
2. He is the most sincere person that I have ever met.
3. Yoga is beneficial to us.
4. No one has come yet.
5. We saw a very exciting film last night.
6. She is humbler than I expected.
7. This is the oldest building in Hyderabad.

Verb: A verb is a word which tells about the action of a noun or a pronoun.
Eg:

1. I ate chocolates.
2. Sita commutes to office by bus.
3. They are anticipating that there would be a strike.
4. He has ruined his life.
5. They have been tolerating this since long.
6. She recommended me for that job.

Adverb: An adverb is a word which tells more about a verb, adjective or another adverb.
Eg:

• Sachin played well.
• They spoke very well at the seminar.
• She comes here mostly on Sundays.

Preposition: A word which tells the position of a noun or a pronoun.
Eg:

1. The cat is on the table.
2. She has been waiting for him since morning.
3. There is a lot of dust behind the curtain.
4. There is a hospital in front of my house.
5. Besides the media, there were a lot of people at the venue.

Conjunction: A word which joins two or more words or sentences.
Eg:

• Ram and Raju are brothers.
• He isnot only a good dancer, but also a poet.
• I will not go there unless I am forced.
• She behaves as though she knows everything.

Interjection: A word which expresses sudden feelings.
Eg:

1. Oh! He has got hurt.
2. Ouch! I have hurt my finger.
