JoSAA Counselling 2025: Increased Cut-Offs, Lower Competition for IIT Admissions

IIT Seat Allotment Cut-Off Rises, Competition Declines
Despite the reputation of IITs, this year has witnessed a slight dip in competition across most IITs—except for IIT Bombay, where demand for Computer Science (CSE) remains strong. Notably, in IIT Hyderabad, the closing rank for boys in the CSE stream rose from 656 last year to 673 this year, reflecting a marginal decrease in competition.
Students appear to find the JEE Advanced exam increasingly difficult, prompting many to limit themselves to JEE Mains, skipping Advanced altogether. As a result, more students are now opting for NITs, IIITs, or even top-tier state engineering colleges rather than attempting to crack IIT admissions.
CSE Remains the Most Demanded Branch
- CSE seats in NITs were allotted only to candidates with ranks up to 13,000, showing strong demand.
- In top NITs, open category CSE seats closed at ranks near 6,000.
- Conversely, for Chemical Engineering, candidates with ranks above 30,000 secured seats, indicating lower demand.
Over 94,000 Web Options for TS EAMCET – All Eyes on Seat Allotment
With JoSAA counselling done, many students who missed out on IIT or NIT seats are now turning to Telangana State Engineering Colleges through the TS EAMCET counselling. On July 18, 2025, the first phase of seat allotment under TS EAMCET will be released.
- 76,795 engineering seats are available under convener quota in Telangana.
- 70% of these are in Computer Science and emerging technologies.
- A total of 94,354 candidates submitted over 5.9 lakh web options, signaling high competition even in state colleges.
Interestingly, even candidates with ranks below 5,000 in TS EAMCET have applied for counselling, emphasizing the surge in preference for local top-tier engineering colleges, especially in light of uncertain national-level outcomes.
