Chronological order of events of Ram Mandir - Babri Majid issue (1528-2024)!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the rituals of "Pran Pratishtha" ceremony at the "historic" Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22. Below is the timeline of Ram Mandir - Babri Masjid issue:

  • 1528: Mughal emperor Babar builds a mosque on the disputed site, claimed by Hindus as the birthplace of Lord Ram.
  • 1530-1605: Ongoing conflicts and sectarian violence surround the Mandir-Masjid debate, with incidents like the construction of a platform during Akbar's time.
  • 1885: Mahant Raghubir Das's plea to build a canopy on Ram Chabootra is rejected by the Faizabad district court.
  • 1859: British officials erect a fence, dividing the site for Muslim and Hindu worship.
  • 1949: An idol of Lord Ram appears inside the mosque, leading to civil suits and the government declaring the area disputed.
  • 1950-1961: Title suits filed, court orders, and the transfer of cases to a special bench of the High Court.
  • 1983: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) initiates a nationwide movement for a temple at the Ayodhya site.
  • 1986: District judge unlocks the mosque gates, sparking the formation of the Babri Masjid Action Committee.
  • 1989-1990: Fresh suits, Shilanyas ceremony, political developments, and clashes between Karsevaks and police.
  • 1992: Babri mosque is demolished, leading to nationwide communal riots.
  • 1996-2004: Political developments, attacks on the disputed site, and legal proceedings.
  • 2001-2003: Rising tensions, archaeological surveys, and court rulings on the ownership of the site.
  • 2010: Allahabad High Court partitions the site between Hindu and Muslim groups, but the Supreme Court stays the verdict.
  • 2015: VHP launches a Shilas campaign, and the Supreme Court recommends an out-of-court settlement.
  • 2018-2019: SC cancels intervention petitions, forms a mediation panel, and later orders day-to-day hearings.
  • 2019: The Supreme Court orders the formation of a trust for the construction of a Ram temple and allocates 5 acres to Muslims for a mosque.
  • 2020: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announces the formation of the trust and lays the foundation stone for the Ram temple.
  • 2024: The new Ram Lalla idol is consecrated at the Ayodhya temple in a historic event attended by PM Modi, marking the end of the almost 70-year-long dispute.
