Importance of Internal Assessment Tests..

Action without plan is waste of time, plan without action is waste of life.

During school education, inter-mediate students will write quarterly, half yearly and pre-final examinations. Marks in these examinations are not used for evaluation of students. Only session end examinations marks score will be considered for student eva-luation. After 12th standard, every student dreams of becoming a good engineer by joining in good engi-neering college. After joining such a college, a question will arise in the mind... Will I be capable of scoring good marks in engineering and how to get good score?

Internal assessment marks system gives the opportunity to subject faculty to know students knowledge both in theory and practicals. Based on this information faculty will guide the students properly. The high score of internal marks will increase overall percentage of marks .When the percen-tage of marks is less than 60%, many public sectors like BHEL, SAIL, GAIL, BDL do not allow students for writing examination. Similarly MNCs and other industry giants do not allow for their tests.

To appear for the examinations of the companies like DRDO, ISRO, BARC, the required minimum percentage of marks is 70%.

For higher studies in good univer-sities and IITs, high percentage of marks are required. For jobs in reputed universities and IITs high percentage of marks are required.

Marks distribution system
Internal assessment tests will be conducted by engineering colleges as per University schedule, while end examinations are conducted by the University. Broadly speaking there are two types of examinations used for student evaluation.
  1. Theory examinations
  2. Practical examinations
The weightage of marks distri-bution between internal assessment tests and end examinations for theory subjects is 25% & 75% respectively.

For practical examinations, the weightage of marks distribution bet-ween internal assessment tests and end examinations is 33% & 67% respect-ively. Theory marks for each subject is evaluated for 100 marks. These 100 marks are distributed between internal assessment tests and end examinations as 25 marks and 75 marks respectively.

To pass a theory subject student must score minimum 35% marks (i.e. 27 marks out of 75) in the end examination and minimum 52% marks in the internal examination (i.e. 13 out of 25 marks). If the student fails to get minimum marks in internal exami-nation (say zero marks), he has to score minimum 53.33% marks (i.e. 40 marks out of 75) in the end examination to pass the subject.

Internal Assessment tests
Theory subjects: Internal assessment tests for each theory subject consists of three parts
(i) Subjective test
(ii) Objective test
(iii) Assignments
Subjective test will be conducted for 10 marks, while objective test will be conducted for 10 marks.
In addition to this, assignments will be given to students by faculty of subject for 5 marks. Marks of these three parts put together will be considered as one internal assessment marks.

Practicals: Similarly internal assess-ment tets for each practical (laboratory) consists of two parts (i) Proper maintenance of observation, record books, viva-voce, punctuality are considered to evaluate for 15 marks (ii) Internal laboratory examination will be conducted for 10 marks. Marks of these two parts put together are called internal assessment marks of practical examination.

End examinations
Theory subjects: Each theory subject is evaluated for 75 marks. Normally it consists of 8 questions, out of which 5 questions are to be answered. Each question carries 15 marks.
Practicals: End examination for practical (laboratory) will be evaluated for 50 marks for each laboratory.

Marks assessment
Internal Assessment Tests:
For 1st year B.Tech students, three internal assessment tests will be conducted in a year. And the average of best two internal assessment tests marks will be considered as final internal assessment marks. From the second year onwards, two internal assessment tests will be conducted per semester. And average of two internal assessment tests marks will be considered as the final internal marks.

Easy methods to score maximum marks
  • Collect the past three years end examinations question papers for each subject with solutions.
  • Get objective type questions of internal examinations for the past three years for each subject with solutions.
  • Assignments: Out of 25 marks, student can score 5 marks easily in assignment. Student has to write answers to assignments at home with the help of books, material etc., and submit them on time to the faculty concerned and will be awarded minimum 4 to 5 marks.
  • Subjective Test: Each test will be conducted for 4 units as per the syllabus, 4 questions will be given and 2 should be answered. Each question carries 5 marks. One way is that student should have to prepare at least 2 units perfectly to score well. If he follows the above technique and prepare accordingly, he will get minimum 8 marks.
  • Objective Test: Twenty objective questions will be given; each question will be awarded ½ a mark. The best way to prepare for this examination is to collect old question papers of minimum 3 years and from these years you will get 120 questions from 4 units, these questions are enough to score minimum 15 to 20 marks in each subject.
  • Be regular to the classes.
  • Glance the notes every day soon after completion of class work. To glance spend 15 minutes for each subject. If there is any difficulty, contact the faculty concerned. This reduces 75% of stress for end examinations preparation.
  • Make summary points for each chapter.
  • Note down objective type questions for each chapter from standard text books.
  • Revise the syllabus once on Sunday without fail.
