ECE Students: Importance areas for Project Work
Sakshi Education
Introduction
The project work in the academic curriculum plays vital role in deciding the future of the students. Of late, project work is gaining utmost priority of an engineer’s training. In almost all the universities, the students are required to submit the project work either in a group or as an individual in the final year as per the curricula of the universities. Students are supposed to select a project out of the topics of their interest or can choose from the list given by the faculty.
The project work may be of various forms which include experimental work, simulation analysis, industry liaison, etc. The procedures followed to select the projects are intended to enhance the technical skills of the students, which can make them fitting candidates in the eyes of industry. Best projects provide students with learning opportunities, which the campus does not provide, and shows how their engineering education is relevant to the practical application.
Generally students would have a lot of doubts as to the project work. This article aims at clearing such doubts to the possible extent. The most important points that student shall remember are - the importance of the project in the curriculum, objectives of the project work, efforts required and facilities needed for completion of the project, among others.
The project work will provide better opportunity to students for learning several aspects that cannot be taught in a class rooms or laboratories. Following are the few objectives of project work -
Most of the students are quite enthusiastic in selecting out-of the-box ideas for their project work. Such attempts by students shall be encouraged by the colleges and government, the trend which could result in many innovations, products and applications at college level itself. Hence, it is very important for students to be conscious about the opportunities that they can seize by selecting a fitting project and complete it within the stipulated time.
Steps that are to be followed for successful completion of project work -
The ECE branch deals with the courses such as Electronic devices, Digital systems, Network theory, Signals & systems, EMF theory, Analog & Digital communications, Electronic circuits, microprocessors, Linear ICs, Digital signal processing, Satellite communications, Optical communications, VLSI, Antennas, etc.
The ECE students have many choices to choose from for their project work such as microcontroller based, communications based, solar, electrical, robotics, sensor based topics, among others. .
There are broadly four major areas in ECE discipline, which are as following-
In Communications Group, the students can opt for project idea in the areas of analog and digital communications that includes different modulation techniques, coding techniques, analysis in terms of bit error rate (BER), carrier to noise ratio (C/N0), etc. Also, they can handle the projects in wireless and mobile communications, satellite communications that include GPS systems, channel modeling, rain attenuation, scintillations, etc. LabVIEW and MATLAB are the two important simulation softwares which can be used to simulate and test the performance of the designed application. A student of ECE must have sufficient knowledge of these softwares.
In Signal Processing Group, various filtering techniques, windowing techniques, FFT methods can be implemented for the application and performance can be compared. This group also includes image processing where more number of project ideas will exist in terms of segmentation techniques, compression techniques, etc. LabVIEW and MATLAB can be used for better analysis and comparisons.
The VLSI Group deals with the topics like VLSI design, FPGA, digital systems, sub system design, etc., where a student can select a good number of projects. Cadence and Microwind tools can be used to design and verify the performance of the systems. VHDL and Verilog are the two important softwares that can be used for simulating digital systems.
A student can select a wide variety of projects from Embedded Systems Group where we find the applications of microprocessors, microcontrollers and daily life applications, among others. Thus, there are plenty of project ideas are available for ECE students to enhance their knowledge and to improve the skill set. Besides this, students can get the information about various topics through internet, reputed journals and books.

- Ability to work as an individual or in a team,
- Enhance leadership qualities,
- Improve communication skills which are essential for the career development,
- Sharpen report writing skills,
- Improve the ability to solve the problem by understanding and applying management skills, and
- Ability to learn the new and useful technologies and applications.

Steps that are to be followed for successful completion of project work -
- Topic Selection
- Literature Survey
- Problem Identification
- Knowing the parameters involved, software (if any) required for simulation, limitations, etc.
- Design and Implementation
- Testing and Verification
- Experimentation
- Project Report Preparation
