States Request 75,000+ Additional Engineering Seats for 2025 Admissions

Hyderabad: The demand for additional engineering seats is soaring in South India, with colleges from Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh applying to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for nearly 50,000 additional seats.

Telangana alone has applied for 20,000 additional engineering seats, citing the increasing demand for technical education in fields like Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Data Science. Currently, Telangana has 1.45 lakh engineering seats, and the additional seats are expected to cater to growing student interest and industry needs.

The Telangana government, however, has written to AICTE requesting prior approval for seat enhancements, emphasizing the need for alignment with state policies. Meanwhile, colleges argue that the state government does not have the authority to deny seat increases without valid reasons.

Engineering Seats in South India: A Dominant Share

South Indian states account for a significant share of engineering seats in India. Among the total 14.9 lakh seats nationwide,

  • Tamil Nadu leads with 3.08 lakh seats,
  • Andhra Pradesh follows with 1.83 lakh seats,
  • Telangana ranks third with 1.45 lakh seats.

These states also dominate in expanding their seat capacity, with 50% of the additional seats for the 2024–25 academic year coming from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.

  • For the 2024–25 academic year, AICTE has granted recognition to 2,906 colleges, with 1,256 colleges increasing their seat capacity.
  • The occupancy ratio in core engineering branches has improved, rising from 72% in 2021–22 to 81% in 2022–23, indicating growing demand.

Trending Engineering Branches in Telangana

Around 23 private colleges in Telangana have proposed offering AI, Cybersecurity, and Data Science as part of their core group combinations. These colleges have claimed to have the necessary infrastructure in place, and AICTE teams are scheduled to visit the state soon to verify these claims.

Growing Demand for Evening B.Tech Courses

AICTE has also approved 400–500 institutions nationwide to offer evening B.Tech courses for working professionals, resulting in an additional 40,000–50,000 seats. With these developments, Telangana and other South Indian states continue to lead in technical education, catering to both student aspirations and industry requirements.
