- India got it’s best ever finish in Men's Giant Slalom event at the ongoing Winter Olympics in Beijing as Indian alpine skier Mohammad Arif Khan secured 45th position after a challenging second run. After clocking 2:47.24 seconds in the second run of the event, Arif earlier finished at 46th spot, but after the disqualification of an athlete, the Indian athlete position was revised to 45th rank. Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt won the Gold medal with 2:09.35 seconds.
- The Indian Alpine Skier had finished on 53rd position in the first run of the event. Amid tough conditions, Arif was amongst the 54 competitors out of 89 who could successfully finish the first run of Men’s Giant slalom. Arif clocked 1:22.35 seconds in the first run at the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre, 19.42s behind leader Marco Odermatt of Switzerland. The Jammu and Kashmir-born skier made his Winter Games debut at the event.
- Earlier, the second run of the Men’s Giant Slalom event was delayed amid heavy snowfall and low visibility at the venue.
- It was the first time snow has fallen during an Alpine skiing race at the Beijing Olympics. Snow has been falling at the Yanqing Alpine Skiing Center, where athletes had been racing and training on artificial snow. A second women’s downhill training run scheduled was canceled.
