Centre promulgates Govt of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023 to constitute National Capital Civil Services Authority

  • Centre has promulgated Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023 to constitute National Capital Civil Services Authority.
  • The Authority will recommend the transfers and postings of all Group 'A' officers and officers of DANICS serving in the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
  • The Authority consists of Chief Minister of Delhi, who shall be the ex officio Chairperson of the Authority, Chief Secretary and Principal Home Secretary of NCT of Delhi. All matters shall be decided by a majority of votes of the members present.

Operation Karuna: INS Gharial delivers medical supplies for people of cyclone-hit Myanmar

  • INS Gharial brought ten medical pallets as High availability disaster recovery supplies for the people affected by Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar as part of Operation Karuna.
  • The Embassy of India in Yangon said in a tweet that the medical supplies include antibiotics, anti-infectives, anti-histamines, bronchodilators, pro-kinetic, eye drops, intravenous fluids and miscellaneous drugs useful for water-borne and epidemical diseases.
  • Operation Karuna has so far provided 16 medical pallets.

Japanese PM Fumio Kishida welcome G7 leaders in Hiroshima

  1. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida welcomed the G7 leaders in Hiroshima where G7 leaders laid wreaths at the Peace Memorial Park today. They also planted saplings at the Memorial Park.
  2. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, European Council President Charles Michel, US President Joe Biden, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posed for the picture
  3. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is the only structure left standing in the area, depicting the aftermath where the world's first atomic bomb was dropped on the city on August 6, 1945. The G7 leaders are currently in Japan to attend the G7 Summit scheduled to be held in Hiroshima from May 19-21. Japan assumed the G7 Presidency in 2023. Japan under its G7 Presidency has invited leaders from Australia, Brazil, Comoros, Cook Islands, India, Indonesia, South Korea and Vietnam.

Twitter and Google big win at US Supreme Court

  • Social media platforms Twitter and Google have registered a big win in US Supreme Court as the court ruled that internet companies can not be held accountable for the content posted on their sites. The judges debated two cases in which the families of terrorist attack victims claimed that Google and Twitter should be held accountable for aiding and abetting ISIS, which resulted in the death of their loved ones.
  • A family of the deceased filed a lawsuit against Twitter and other tech companies, claiming they did not do enough to combat the terrorist organisation when an ISIS-linked attacker opened fire at a nightclub in Turkey, on 1st of January, 2017, killing at least 38 people. Similar facts were given in the Google case.

UK announces ban on Russian diamonds & metals ahead of G7 meeting in Japan

  • he United Kingdom has announced ban on Russian diamonds alongside the military-industrial complex and metals in fresh round of sanctions ahead of G7 meeting in Japan. In a statement, UK government said, the ban has also been announced on imports of Russian-origin copper, aluminium and nickel. Along with these trade sanctions, the UK is also preparing to target an additional 86 members of Russia's military-industrial complex as well as those engaged in vital industries including energy, metals, and shipping.
  • as the UK continues to engage with G7 allies to address all types of sanctions circumvention, they also include those who actively help the Kremlin in its efforts to weaken the impact of current sanctions. Meanwhile, the United States will also unveil new sanctions to extensively restrict Russia's access to goods that matter for its battlefield capabilities. A US official said that the United States plans to blacklist about 70 companies and organizations for selling restricted American products to Russia.

RBI withdraws Rs 2000 notes from circulation under Clean Note Policy; To remain legal tender

  • The Reserve Bank of India has decided to withdraw two thousand Rupees denomination banknotes from circulation under the Clean Note Policy”. The 2,000 rupee notes, however, will continue to be legal tender.
  • RBI has said members of the public may deposit 2,000 rupee banknotes into their bank accounts or exchange them for banknotes of other denominations at any bank branch.
  • In a statement, releasedthe Central bank stated that in order to ensure operational convenience and to avoid disruption of regular activities of bank branches, the exchange of 2000 rupee banknotes into banknotes of other denominations can be made upto a limit of 20,000 rupees at a time at any bank starting from the 23rd of May, 2023.

Tennis legend Rafael Nadal withdraws from French Open due to injury

  • Tennis legend Rafael Nadal pulled out of the French Open due to a hip injury that has sidelined him from the game since January. Nadal also said that he expects 2024 to be the final season of his career. Nadal, who is the owner of a record 14 championships at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament, will miss it for the first time. He made his debut in the tournament in 2005. 
  • The French Open begins at Roland Garros in Paris on May 28. Nadal holds an unmatchable record from his 18 appearances at the French Open. When Nadal won the trophy last year at age 36 while dealing with chronic foot pain, he became the oldest champion in tournament history.
